"The support of the water gave me more confidence and I felt more able to try exercises I wouldn’t have coped with otherwise." Mel describes how a research trial into the benefits of exercising in water improved her fitness and wellbeing after diagnosis. And specialist fitness coach Mary gives tips on getting active with Parkinson's. "Although I ached afterwards, my body benefitted from moving and stretching in different ways, and being challenged. "It seemed to give me a mental and physical boost, and a short break from some symptoms. Being in water was naturally relaxing and helped ease muscle tension." It's never too early or too late to take steps to help promote your brain health. To help get you started, we asked Alynn — a dedicated Alzheimer's Association volunteer and community educator who lost her mother to Alzheimer's — how she works some brain-healthy habits into her daily routine: ??♀? Get Moving "I make time for physical activity every day. I keep easy equipment at home, like a yoga mat or a few dumbbells, that I can use if I can't get to the gym. I try to schedule my workouts the day before or a week before so that it's already in my calendar. I try to work out either first thing in the morning before I start my day or in the evening." ?? Eat Right "I try to eat whole foods as much as possible and prioritize cooking at home, so I know exactly what goes into everything I eat. Sometimes it's hard to eat all the fruits and vegetables that go bad quickly. A tip I found helpful is to freeze the fruits and vegetables and make them into popsicles or ice cubes that you can use in smoothies or add to yogurt." ?? Sleep Well "I've implemented certain little habits to try to quiet my mind so that I can fall asleep and wake up energized. I minimize my screen time a few hours before going to bed. I have not had a TV in my room for years, because that can be an easy habit to fall into. And I found certain apps to be helpful that provide white noise at night, or a sleepcast, which is almost like a meditation that talks to you and helps you fall asleep." ?? Challenge Your Mind "I’m trying to learn foreign languages. There are apps I use that I find helpful that gamify learning a language. It challenges me and gets me out of my comfort zone." Deciding to move someone into a care home is a big decision. Our community shared some honest and practical advice about how, when and why to take this step: How do you know when the time is right? ‘My wife and I had wonderful support from family and friends after she was diagnosed with young-onset dementia in 2013. But by the end of 2018, I was burning out. From day one, she loved the care home. I hope this proves that, fortuitously, we got the timing spot-on.’ - Trevor, whose wife lives with dementia. What are the benefits of a care home? ‘It’s 24-hour support, and care homes are also sociable places with lots going on, which can help slow down someone’s decline. It can also be easier for friends and family to visit and spend quality time together, without worrying about doing the washing up or popping to the shops.’ - Dementia Advisers Who makes the decision to find a care home? 'If the person with dementia has lost the capacity to decide themselves, it's often a family member making the decision, or someone with lasting power of attorney. The main question to consider is "What is in the best interests of the person with dementia?" If you can no longer provide the level of care they need, or they can’t live independently any more, it might be time to consider it.' - Dementia Advisers Can I make the decision to find a home myself? ‘Yes! My husband, Keith, was diagnosed with dementia and after that my memory just went downhill. It was Keith who first lived at the care village, but I didn’t want to be at home by myself – I would have been too isolated. I settled in here straight away really, I’m very happy.’ - Kath, who lives with dementia. How much will it cost to use a care home? 'As someone’s support needs increase, homecare costs can be very high, so care homes can be a more affordable way to get the right level of support. Asking your local authority or trust for an assessment will give you a clear understanding of what kind of home is most appropriate – and it will also work out whether you can apply for help with the costs.' - Dementia Advisers. If you need support or advice, call the Dementia Support Line on 0333 150 3456.
