  • Annual Conference Session Highlight! Session: Adaptive Video Gaming: Overcoming Impairment and Building Social Connection Speaker: Roberta Olivares, OT Occupation is not limited to our vocational roles; it also encompasses how we choose to spend our time, including the interests and activities that shape our identity. What we do during leisure time can be as defining as our professional pursuits. Video gaming, a multi-billion-dollar industry, serves a diverse and growing population. Gamers—individuals who engage in video gaming for extended periods—represent a wide range of backgrounds and abilities. While societal stereotypes once framed gaming as isolating or linked to introversion, the reality can be quite different. For people with disabilities, the virtual world provides freedom of movement, endless possibilities, and an inclusive space free from preconceived limitations. Gaming can foster social connection, counteracting isolation and promoting inclusion. For gamers who experience a traumatic event or medical diagnosis that alters their ability to play, this shift can be emotionally challenging. Gaming, however, can offer a pathway back to joy, identity, and community. Occupational therapists, with their holistic approach to treatment, address mental health, physical needs, sensory concerns, and cognitive abilities. This comprehensive perspective enables them to create personalized adaptations to help patients re-engage with gaming. Adaptations may include utilizing in-game accessibility settings, recommending specialized hardware, or customizing controllers to improve usability. Occupational therapists analyze movement patterns, coordination, and game mechanics to design modifications tailored to individual needs. • Core Principle 5: Therapeutic Handling to Enhance Functional Outcomes Using intentional, skilled and dynamic handling strategies, we strive for functional independence and participation. This therapeutic handling allows us to assess and respond to patient-initiated movements; to provide precise, targeted input; and to improve motor control, postural control and movement efficiency. Intervention is guided by handling to limit negative neuroplastic changes and to provide a solid foundation for future skill development. #NDT #NDTA #OT #PT #SLP #NDTcoreprinciples

  • Annual Conference Session Highlight! Session: Maximizing Function for Eating and Drinking through NDT and Play Speakers: Rona Alexander, CCC-SLP, PhD, C/NDT, and Bethanne Mazurczak, CCC-SLP, C/NDT This intermediate level session has been designed for Speech-Language Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, and Physical Therapists. It focuses on the challenges that may be encountered with the integration and carryover of functional tasks that lead to the practice and repetition of eating and drinking activities outside of the intervention session environment. The identification of impairments that impact on a child’s oral, pharyngeal, and respiratory function during eating and drinking are essential to creating the program that will engage the child through play to experience these new functional tasks. Case discussions and group problem-solving will be used to show the incorporation of therapeutic handling and sensory strategies to address postural alignment, respiration, and oral function as a means of maximizing a child’s motivation through play to participate in eating and drinking activities, not just during an intervention session but also at home, in school, at a restaurant with the family, and at a party with friends. • Core Principle 4: Design and Implement a Plan of Care Practitioners create and implement each patient’s plan of care by synthesizing multiple variables from ongoing evaluation. Strategies are developed that are unique to and within the context of the patient’s desired outcome and available resources. Utilizing a dynamic therapeutic environment, functional goals and impairments are concurrently addressed. The therapeutic challenge is adapted and progresses within the session based on patient response and feedback. Video clip: https://lnkd.in/gJ9cekKy #NDT #NDTA #OT #PT #SLP #NDTcoreprinciples
