??The Climate City Contract (CCC), the strategic instrument of the EU Cities Mission has unlocked innovation in many ways, starting with helping cities break silos in their approach to climate neutrality. #MissionCities have been encouraged to set up a dedicated Transition Team to help with the preparation and implementation of their CCC, and they are now better equipped to tackle profoundly inter-connected challenges, requiring to mobilise expertise across sectors and departments.? It facilitates collaboration, co-creation, promotes internal commitment, and supports more robust and inclusive strategies in reaching climate neutrality by 2030.? Reflecting on an inspiring couple of days at the Intelligent Cities Challenge (ICC) Conference and Mayors-Business Forum?? What an inspiration to see how cities have been embracing the journey from challenge to change through transformative local green deals (LGDs). Yesterday and today, we had the privilege of hearing from cities that are leading the way towards a sustainable future. Among them were some insightful examples from several #MissionCities, who are using LGDs to advance their climate neutrality goals: ? Prim?ria Municipiului Cluj-Napoca used multiple LGDs to foster sustainability, for instance to make cultural events greener, and connecting with its rural surroundings through a circular economy approach. ? Municipality of Kalamata (Kalamata 2030) successfully engaged local communities using LGDs, facilitating stakeholder engagement as they developed their Climate City Contract (CCC). ? Cork City Council - Comhairle Cathrach Chorcaí is driving the “Coalition of the Willing” to accelerate sustainability efforts, through long-lasting partnerships with local businesses and the Chamber of Commerce, Cork?(Cork Chamber). ? Stadt Dortmund, known as the "capital of PV on private roofs" in Germany, has an ambitious renewable energy and energy savings policy; it also leverages strong collaboration with local SMEs and the tech sector. In addition to remarkable examples from ICC cities, discussions on the newly adopted Clean Industrial Deal emphasised the importance of city-business collaboration. Diana, Prof. Dr. Pretzell, Deputy Mayor of Stadt Mannheim, underscored the crucial role of industry partnerships and the value of EU support for cities pursuing climate neutrality. Mission Manager, Patrick Child, Deputy Director General, DG Environment, European Commission and Thomas Osdoba, NetZeroCitiesEU Programme Director were boh in attendance. Thomas participated to the panel on 'City-business collaboration for competitiveness and prosperity' and Patrick participated to the ICC Mayors - Business Forum. 2?? #MissionCities' Policy Briefs uncovering industry decarbonisation and the decarbonisation of agriculture and food systems! While food systems account for a significant share of total emissions in the EU, there is still no coherent political strategy to enable such transition and in the second quarter of 2024, industry accounted for 22.7% of the EU’s total emissions. ? Cities are crucial to help the transformations in these sectors, take a deep dive into the insights from Mission Cities which raised their policy-related challenges in the industry as well as agriculture and food systems.
