How have you budgeted for your IT needs? ???Evaluate the potential for outsourcing IT functions that are not central to the business, which can reduce costs and free up internal resources for strategic initiatives. ???Ensure that IT investments directly support the company's strategic objectives. Prioritize projects that drive growth, enhance efficiency, or improve customer experience. ???Start from scratch each budgeting cycle, justifying every expense rather than relying on previous budgets. This helps identify unnecessary costs and allocate resources more effectively. ↗??Invest in scalable technologies that can grow with the business. This reduces the need for frequent large expenditures as the company expands. ???Utilize cloud services to lower upfront costs and provide flexibility. Pay-as-you-go models can help manage cash flow and reduce financial risk. ???Allocate sufficient budget for cybersecurity to protect sensitive data and maintain customer trust. This can prevent costly breaches and regulatory fines.

Last night, the StartupExperts brought together an incredible group of HR, Finance, and Ops leaders in for an evening of great conversations, delicious cocktails, and stunning views of the city. This wasn’t just another networking event—it was a safe space for meaningful discussions about the rapid changes shaping our industry since the November election and how we, as leaders, can navigate them. From reconnecting with familiar faces to meeting new ones, the energy in the room was inspiring. A huge thank you to Stephen Cisarik at Newmark for providing such an amazing venue, and to our generous partners VISTRA, Network Right, and Sequoia for making the evening great. We also want to thank Kim Minnick for sharing her thoughts about the current state of affairs and for encouraging us all to lean in as leaders. We also want to give a shout-out to the over 25 attendees that took the time to write a personalized and supportive note to a senior citizen at part of Sequoia's #Random Acts of Love campaign and their partnership with the Letters Against Isolation non-profit. #myactoflove #StartupExperts #HRLeadership #FinanceLeaders #OpsCommunity #Networking #Leadership

You’ve probably heard the term “firewall” and know it’s important, but do you know why? Firewalls help businesses reduce security risks by blocking unauthorized users from accessing sensitive data and systems. They add a layer of protection for user data, defend against some cyber threats, and can help reduce IT downtime. ?Many computers come with built-in firewall security features, but they’re not always enabled by default. Check the comments for a quick guide on how to turn them on for Mac & Windows!

I’m Slack. And thanks to me? It’s back to carrier pigeons and email threads. In all seriousness, unplanned downtime is never fun. We all think we're the exception...until we're not. Today, Slack went down for many users (including us!). This left thousands of organizations in the dark if they didn't have any continuity plans. Here are some quick tips to navigate situations like this and better prepare your organization when disaster strikes. Take it from Mayhem, he knows a thing or two about better protection! 1. If you notice a business critical system is not functioning the way it should, check the status page of the application (i.e. https://slack-status.com/) and Down Detector. 2. If you find your team is also impacted, quickly notify your company via alternative communication channels, like email. 3. If available, point team members to use adjacent platforms if already a user, like Microsoft Teams or Google Chat or Zoom Chat, to ensure communication remains uninterrupted. 4. Bonus points: Create a business continuity/disaster recovery plan in the event of future unplanned outages. #slack #slackoutage #slackdown

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery ?? When there are people (possibly robots ??) pretending to be an executive and asking for some form of monetary value, it’s a bit sketchy…. and before you send that gift card, make sure to check the following to make sure it is a valid request: ???Verify the sender’s email address. Look for misspellings or domain differences (@companyname.com). ??Is there some sense of urgency or pressure to act quickly? Scammers use this tactic often to instill fear. ???Check if the request is unusual for that executive. Would they typically ask for monetary transactions via email? If you’re doubtful, contact the executive directly through phone, Slack/Teams, etc. ???Look for grammatical errors or awkward phrasing, which can be signs of phishing attempts. Check for inconsistencies in the email content or tone compared to previous communications from that executive. ????Be wary of any attachments or links in the email. Hover over links to see the actual URL before clicking. ???If you suspect fraud, report the email to your IT department or follow your organization's procedures for handling phishing attempts.
