What Trump's Victory Could Mean for the NTIA BEAD Program https://lnkd.in/eMgAn_xk With Election Day in the rearview mirror, Wireless 20/20 believes?it is time to consider what a second Donald Trump administration would mean for the broadband industry.?Specifically, what the Trump victory could mean for the $42.5 billion Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) Program being implemented under the Biden-Harris administration Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). A coalition of lawmakers led by Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.) and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) who recently scored a convincing re-election victory, delivered a letter in September 2024 sharply rebuking Vice President Kamala Harris for her failures as “broadband czar” in the Biden administration.?“Despite your assurances over three years ago, rural and unserved communities continue to wait for the connectivity they were promised." The clear beneficiaries of Trump’s re-election could be the low-Earth orbit satellite providers operating in the US. LightReading's Mike Dano agrees that this includes Amazon’s Project Kuiper and Starlink owned by SpaceX.?Trump ally Elon Musk has a 42% controlling stake in SpaceX.?NTIA recently issued guidance for how states can use BEAD subsidies on alternative technologies like LEO satellites. https://lnkd.in/eheUF_pX SpaceX is already working with the NTIA to determine whether Starlink could bid on BEAD projects and SpaceX President and Chief Operating Officer Gwynne Shotwell said they are “very interested in participating.” ?Starlink will still need to meet BEAD speed requirements of 100Mbps download speed, 20Mbps upload speed and latency of less than or equal to 100 milliseconds. Shotwell believes Starlink can meet the broadband speed and latency requirements of BEAD.?The most recent Ookla speed test data shows Starlink users in the US got average speeds of 79Mbps download, 10Mbps upload and 58ms latency – currently below NTIA requirements in every category. Our Wireless 20/20 team is now assessing the potential role LEO satellite service integrated with fiber and wireless broadband could play in BEAD-funded projects for exceptionally rural and hard-to-reach remote areas. We plan to integrate Starlink into the next release of our WiROI? db platform. President-elect Trump himself has suggested using Starlink’s satellite services for rural connectivity—a potential financial boon to Starlink—as part of the government BEAD plan for future broadband funding.?Trump believes Starlink’s LEO satellites can fill gaps in the BEAD plan to connect every American home up to high-speed internet. Trump recently said of BEAD on the Joe Rogan Experience #2219 podcast: “We’re spending a trillion dollars?to get cables all over the country, up to upstate areas?where you have two farms, and they are spending millions of dollars to have a cable. Elon can do it for nothing.”
