Long before social media, watercolour paintings recorded the places people visited and the adventures they had. From the album Reminiscences of North America, these works were compiled either for or by Thomas Evans Blackwell, general manager and vice-president of the Grand Trunk Railway (GTR) Company of Canada from 1858 to 1865. The album, which includes maps, photographs and watercolours of a personal and professional nature, mostly features scenes from along the routes of the GTR, but also includes views of the Canadian West and Niagara Falls. 1. #COP29?closed with a new finance goal to help countries to protect their people and economies against climate disasters, and share in the vast benefits of the clean energy boom. ???? The nearly 200 countries at the UN climate change conference in Baku, Azerbaijan also reached important agreements on carbon markets, transparent climate reporting and adaptation. The finance agreement at COP29 comes as stronger national climate plans become due from all countries next year. I’ve spent the last couple of months with Daniel Macfarlanes recent book: The Lives of Lake Ontario. It’s pretty solid work where I was mainly interested in environmental degradation, the governance and perception of pollution. There were parts I would have like to have dedicated more space to unpack, but in general I feel the main themes were covered. I’m quoting myself here because someone at Bluesky emphasized this part. "Throughout the book, Lake Ontario is depicted as both resilient and fragile. In his conclusion, MacFarlane reiterates this duality, pointing to the ways in which some lives—both human and non-human— thrives, while others are destroyed."
