Foreign aid cuts threaten vulnerable dogs in the impoverished South African community of Calvinia. The sudden freeze on USAID funding has plummeted South African NGOs into chaos. With millions of dollars in aid disappearing overnight, funds are being redirected from animal welfare programs into human-focused initiatives, leaving even less available for the animals. In Calvinia alone, more than 200 street dogs rely on us and our partner for survival. As funding dries up, our team faces even more challenges as they struggle to care for animals who truly have no one else to turn to. For many of Spain’s hunters, their dogs are nothing more than tools to be used, abused and discarded when they have ‘served their purpose.’ These hunting dogs, called galgos, are bred by the thousands and forced into a brutal regime of intense, often abusive training. Many do not even survive the five-month hunting season. However, once the season is over, the real killing begins. Only the fastest, most aggressive animals are selected for breeding – the rest are discarded, abandoned to starve or killed in the most horrific ways. Thank you for saving Samra the street cat from dying alone on the streets! This sweet girl was in unbearable pain after she was hit by a car in Jordan, leaving both her front legs paralyzed. Luckily for Samra, our partner, Al Rahmeh, was quickly called in and saved her just in time. Samra was rushed to the Al Rahmeh veterinarian, who discovered that both her front legs were badly broken. The team immediately sent her to surgery, fixing her legs with plates and external pins. Today, Samra is recovering in a foster home while she awaits her second surgery. With all the love and support she is receiving, thanks in no small part to our loyal supporters, it is incredibly heartwarming to see her playful personality returning. With the hunting season over, thousands of dogs are being killed or discarded to die in Spain. Despite his horrific injuries, Mozart is one of the ‘lucky’ ones. When our partner, Galgos del Sur, found Mozart, he was frail and hairless, his body swollen with infection and malnutrition. Even though he barely had the strength to stand, he still fled from his rescuers, and it took days to catch him. Mozart’s horrific injuries – including an untreated fracture, severe malnutrition, anaplasma and leishmania – were all caused by his owner’s neglect and abuse. After treating his wounds and showing him nothing but love and care, this sweet boy has realized that he is finally safe and has even started wagging his tail again. We have wonderful news from Spain! After devastating floods razed animal shelters in Valencia, Spain, your support has helped our partner rebuild and recover. When the floods came in October last year, the warnings came too late. People and animals alike were caught off-guard, leaving thousands in crisis as nearly a year’s worth of rain bucketed down in just eight hours. Our partner, Refugio de Maria (Maria’s Shelter), was so badly damaged that it was virtually inaccessible. Yet despite the risks, the team refused to abandon their animals, staying with them as the water level rose higher and higher. Work is still ongoing to repair and rebuild, and the animals are being kept in a temporary warehouse shelter. With their funds stretched incredibly thin, we eased their financial burden by contributing towards food for the animals and helping with repair costs. Thanks to you, the animals are fed and safe as they wait to return to their home, which should be finished in about a month.
