The role of food in health and education outcomes is undeniable and the need to shift diets to achieve climate and sustainability goals widely acknowledged. The drumbeat for public procurement of food for schools, hospitals, care homes etc. to lead this charge has been growing louder for several years. Driven by great campaigning and policy work from the likes of The Food Foundation , Henry Dimbleby , Food for Life, and Sustain: The alliance for better food and farming, there is now a wealth of evidence for the social and environmental benefits of cooked meals, wholefood ingredients and short supply chains, together with clear and actionable recommendations for the policies required to redirect public sector catering towards these goals. Delivered through Entegra and with Agile Chain technology from Equilibrium Markets Ltd at its heart, this agreement covering ￡100m of public sector food spend will simplify food procurement through collective purchasing and shorter supply chains and reduce climate impact. Key Wins: 1. Climate Finance Commitment: Developed nations pledged to mobilise $300 billion annually by 2035 to support developing countries in combating climate change. 2. Carbon Market Framework: Approval of a rulebook for carbon credit trading, potentially unlocking additional climate finance. 3. Mexico's 2050 Net-Zero Pledge: Mexico committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, aligning with global efforts to limit temperature rise. 4. China's Enhanced Climate Commitment: China announced plans to peak carbon emissions before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality before 2060, demonstrating increased ambition in climate action. 5. ExxonMobil's Advocacy: ExxonMobil CEO Darren Woods urged President-elect Donald Trump to maintain U.S. participation in the Paris Agreement, emphasizing the importance of global cooperation. Notable Shortcomings: 1. Insufficient Funding: The $300 billion annual pledge falls short of the estimated $1.3 trillion needed annually by 2035 to effectively address climate challenges (fossil fuel subsidies ≈ $620 billion in 2023...). 2. Inadequate Fossil Fuel Transition Plans: The agreement lacked concrete steps for transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy, with resistance from some major producers. 3. Global Warming Trajectory Concerns: Current commitments are insufficient to limit global warh projections indicating a potential rise of up to 2.5°C by the end of the century. 4. Political Uncertainty: The re-election of Donald Trump, known for his climate skepticism, casts doubt on future U.S. commitments. 5. Fossil Fuel Industry Influence: The significant presence of fossil fuel lobbyists at the sums about their impact on climate negotiations. ...
