Just got back from a fun lil video shoot in Downtown Orlando (Downtown Orlando Partnership) for City District Main Street at Gringos Locos! I dig what City District is doing with #content right now. It is something that just about any member-based group should start doing immediately. Every month, a business is featured as its business of the month with a blog, a couple of photos and a short video. They have not shared their criteria or their selection process with me. But here are my takeaways from what doing something like this accomplishes. 1. It increases value for members. As a membership group, it's important to continually seek ways that those who join and either pay dues or support you can benefit from the collaboration. 2. It shows non-members your commitment to members. On the flip side, if I have not joined your group and I see that you are going the extra mile to provide value, I'm going to do more than "kick the tires" on your group. Instead, I'll likely consider much more strongly joining so that I can benefit from the membership, as well. 3. Personality: engaged. Some groups don't do enough to get out there, have some personality (or, more accurately, share their leaders' personalities). That ends up creating a vibe that perhaps is too formal and off-putting for some others. Your video can feature board members and convey the message of, "Hey, I'm fun, dammit!" Don't force it, of course. But if you have anyone who has a natural personality, let it shine! Take that advice for what it is: an informed opinion about why content is critical and can help member groups grow and, just as importantly, stand out!
