Why Maternal Health Needs a Revolution: As Women’s History Month comes to a close, let’s remember that history isn’t just something we look back on—it’s something we’re creating right now. And when it comes to maternal health, the story we’re writing needs to change. Too many mothers and babies are falling through the cracks in the critical first six weeks postpartum—but it doesn’t have to be this way. We all have a role to play in reshaping this narrative, ensuring that support, care, and resources reach every family that needs them. In the U.S., nearly half of pregnancy-related deaths occur in the postpartum period, and approximately half of these deaths occur within the first six weeks after delivery. Worse yet… 80% are preventable. Despite this, 40% of new parents never attend their six-week postpartum checkup, leaving serious health risks undetected (ACOG). Dr. Alison Stuebe, in ACOG’s Committee Opinion published in May 2018 put it best: “New mothers need ongoing care during the ‘fourth trimester’. We want to replace the one-off checkup at six weeks with a period of sustained, holistic support for growing families.” It is important to note that maternal mortality rates have not gotten any better since this opinion was first published in 2018. At Nest Collaborative, we believe accessible, continuous care during the postpartum period is critical to saving lives. Our virtual lactation support is an essential component to holistic postpartum care, providing timely, compassionate, and insurance-covered care in all 50 states. We hear sentiments like this from our patients all the time: “My IBCLC has been amazing - she’s probably the most helpful person in the first 12 weeks postpartum and I am so grateful for her!” It’s time to revolutionize postpartum care—becuase no mother should be left to navigate this alone. Question for those who work in healthcare AND those who don’t… In your opinion, why is early, accessible postpartum care still not the norm in the U.S.? Let’s push forward—together. Nest CEO Judith Nowlin talks about #BlackHistoryMonth and how Nest Collaborative has worked towards health equity in maternal care & reducing the racial gap in breastfeeding rates. Black families seen by Nest's IBCLCs, for example, have breastfeeding rates 1.5 times higher than the national average. But of course it's not just about the numbers, it's about the families behind those numbers who are finally receiving the care & support they deserve ????
As this Black History Month comes to a close, I’m reflecting on the powerful journey toward health equity in maternal care. While we’ve made some strides, the persistent disparities in maternal health outcomes—especially for Black families—demand more than just acknowledgment; they require action. At Nest Collaborative, we’ve seen some encouraging progress. For example, Black families seen by Nest’s IBCLCs have breastfeeding rates 1.5 times higher than the national average. But it's not just about the numbers. It’s about the families behind those numbers—families who are finally receiving the care and support they deserve. Our team works hard to meet families where they are, offering care in over 200 languages and building a network of diverse IBCLCs who reflect the communities we serve. We're committed to breaking down the systemic barriers that have too long kept quality care out of reach for so many. The resilience and wisdom of Black maternal health advocates have been a constant inspiration for us at Nest. Amanda Williams, Fatmata Williams, Jamie Hughes, DNP, RN, NE-BC, Elizabeth Simmons, MS, CD, Dr. Pinkey Patel, Melissa Bowley, Anish Sebastian, Amy VanHaren, Alison Greenberg, Brittany Barreto, Ph.D., and so many more! Who in your community is making waves in the fight for maternal health equity? Tag them below, so we can celebrate and amplify their incredible work! #BlackHistoryMonth #MaternalHealthEquity #BreastfeedingSupport #IBCLCs
