Happy Dyscalculia Day! With World Book Day and Dyscalculia Day only a few days apart this week, we thought we would share a fun way to combine both! Background: Did you know that subitising* (the ability to automatically recognise quantities without counting) is a typical weakness for people with dyscalculia? Subitising is an important skill because it helps create a strong foundation for number sense, much the same way that phonemic awareness creates a solid foundation for word reading and how learning vocabulary through picture books helps create a solid foundation for language and reading comprehension. *British English spelling Activity: Listen: The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle ??https://lnkd.in/eGxprFBp Interact: Can your child recognise how many apples, pears, plums, strawberries, and oranges there are? Which quantities can they recognise without counting (subitising)? Do they prefer to count? That's okay! Learning to count items 1 to 1 is an essential math skill too! It's important to meet your child where they are and have fun learning new skills! Learn more about the Number Sense by Nessy program (ages 4-8) at Nessy.com.

Every week, we break down educational jargon into simple definitions! In celebration of?#dyscalculiaday?- this week's word is?'subitising'.* Subitising is the ability to quickly see how many items are in a group without counting them. Fun fact! Chris Woodin's Number Sense by Nessy program helps students master and use their subitising skills by ensuring that they can connect the grouped pictures that represent the number (5 dots) to the more abstract written number (5). "Like reading, math involves many cognitive processes or systems. Ideally, teachers should diagnose and treat math breakdowns with the same specificity and strategies they apply to language-based instruction. In the classroom, we break down the complex processing tasks of reading and spelling into various subskills that can be tested and analyzed. As a result, students’ strengths and weaknesses may be acknowledged, and an effective course of action can be planned and implemented. Math skills, however, are not routinely evaluated in this manner." - Christopher Woodin *British English spelling #WOTW?#dyscalculiaday?#dyscalculia
