History of Web Design from the 1900s to 2000 As of 2016, over 3.4 billion people had access to the web. But how did this all begin? It all began in 1989 in a computer lab at the European Organization for Nuclear Research. Tim Berners-Lee, a British computer scientist, was working at CERN when he conceived an idea. His idea led him to build the very first website using plain HTML. Back then, the web was like a system to link information together using hypertext, and was made only for scientists at CERN to easily share research data and not for the public. Soon after this, the first search engine, ALIWEB, was created by Dutch software engineer Martijn Koster in 1993 using simple color blocks to help users navigate. This was the period when landing pages and early banner ads made their debut, inviting visitors to 'Click Here'. Nevertheless, how did we get to where we are today from this basic web?
