Northeastern Regional Association of Coastal Ocean Observing Systems
关于我们
NERACOOS (Northeastern Regional Association of Coastal Ocean Observing Systems) is a component of the US IOOS (Integrated Ocean Observing System), spanning coastal waters from the Canadian Maritime Provinces to the New York Bight. Our mission is to make available information to those who use these waters. We provide weather and ocean data to fishers and commercial shippers determining if conditions are safe for passage and to emergency managers issuing storm warnings. We are also advancing efforts to use these data for water quality monitoring, harmful algal bloom predictions and warnings, and coastal flooding and erosion forecasting systems.

Congratulations, Pam and Prassede!!! You've both been incredible friends and partners to NERACOOS, including deeply engaged Board members, and could not be more deserving of this recognition.
Congratulations to Massachusetts Bays National Estuary Partnership Executive Director, Pam DiBona and Senior Scientist Prassede Vella, Senior Scientist, both were recognized for helping to make a significant difference in protecting the health and sustainability of the Gulf of Maine watershed with the?Gulf of Maine Council on the Marine Environment ?#massbaysnep?#gulfofmaine?#protectmarinehabitat?#protectmarinelife?#protectmarineecosystems

Check out this great pair of blog posts - with accompanying video clips - from our partners at the Gulf of Maine Research Institute on two important tools for observing the ocean: data buoys that have been in operation for decades and are bedrock components of oceanography in the Northeast, and environmental DNA, which is growing as part of the ocean science toolkit. https://lnkd.in/erbe7adk

Our team has been working with a growing group of partners, including Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, University of Maine, and University of New Hampshire, to be build a state-of-the-art system for monitoring Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) in the Northeast as part of the National Harmful Algal Bloom Observing Network (NHABON). HABs threaten human health, wildlife, seafood production, and recreation, so early warning and improved understanding of when, where, and why they occur has widespread benefits. Cuts proposed for the NOAA National Center for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS) Competitive Research budget, which includes NHABON, threaten the critical monitoring infrastructure we are working hard to maintain for the benefit of people and the environment. Please consider signing on to the national letter of support to protect this vital program. https://lnkd.in/eAPTeJkD

It’s been a great week in DC celebrating the 20-year anniversary of our friends at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Association Coastal Ocean Observing System (MARACOOS). Congratulations and best of luck for even more success in the next 20 years! My time in DC was even better for the chance to get together with other great partners from IOOS Association, Alaska Ocean Observing System, CARICOOS INC, Southeast Coastal Ocean Observing Regional Association (SECOORA), NANOOS, and the NOAA National Ocean Service IOOS Office!

This was a great panel to be part of! Thanks to Toby for the invitation, Nick for moderating, and my fellow panelists for their thoughtful insights. It was encouraging to hear us all reinforcing several key points about how to improve collection, management, and dissemination of data to better support policy, the environment, and the blue economy.
