Wildfires are a major risk in California, but there are affordable steps you can take to improve your home’s resilience. Here are some of the best cost-effective measures: ?? Defensible Space (Free - Low Cost) 1. Clear vegetation – Remove dead plants, dry leaves, and pine needles within 30 feet of your home. 2. Trim trees – Keep branches at least 10 feet away from your house and chimney. 3. Mow grass – Keep it under 4 inches tall, especially within the first 30 feet. 4. Move woodpiles – Store firewood at least 30 feet from structures. 5. Use gravel or stone – Replace flammable mulch near your house with non-combustible materials. ?? Home Hardening (Low - Moderate Cost) 6. Screen vents – Cover attic, soffit, and foundation vents with 1/8-inch metal mesh to prevent embers from entering. 7. Install gutter guards – Prevent dry leaves from accumulating and igniting. 8. Seal gaps – Use caulk or weatherstripping to close gaps where embers could enter. 9. Fire-resistant roofing & siding – If replacing, consider metal, tile, or Class A-rated materials. ?? Water & Emergency Prep (Low Cost) 10.
