October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month! NENA reminds the 9-1-1 community to stay vigilant in reducing online risks and preparing for potential cyber threats. While Next Generation 9-1-1 technology is bringing enhanced security capabilities to some areas, it is not immune to risks, either; and most communities are still operating with legacy 9-1-1. Many cyber risks arise outside our ecosystem and are difficult or impossible to mitigate on our own. Meanwhile, here are 4 easy tips to protect yourself and your 9-1-1 center: Use strong, unique passwords with a mix of characters Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) Watch out for phishing attempts and don't share sensitive info Keep your software up to date with the latest security patches For more resources, check out this cybersecurity toolkit from the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) ?? https://lnkd.in/e2bXzx4i #CyberSecurityAwareness #NG911

Last month, NENA: The 9-1-1 Association and APCO International?called on Kamala Harris and Donald J. Trump?to promise to support full federal funding for Next Generation 9-1-1 implementation in every community. StateScoop reports, "NENA and its allies have been pushing for federal support for next-generation 911 upgrades for years, citing the potential of the technology's new features — such as easier call routing, location sharing between call centers and multimedia integration — and the increasing frequency with which the nation's decades-old call centers experience outages." From Florida to the Carolinas, the devastation left in the wake of #HurricaneHelene is catastrophic. NENA is monitoring the situation and reviewing recovery efforts, including the restoration of 9-1-1 services and cellular networks, and we are pleased with the success of Next Generation 9-1-1 (#NG911) technologies providing critical support in this time of crisis. We're also monitoring TERT (Telecommunicator Emergency Response Taskforce) requests and deployments. Designed to quickly mobilize trained public safety telecommunicators to assist communications centers during disasters, TERTs help ensure mutual aid with deployable telecommunicators during emergencies on this scale. It has been amazing to see TERTs deployed nationwide since last week, marking one of the largest multi-state emergency responses to a natural disaster in U.S. history. We are incredibly proud of our profession for having the tools, training, and selfless individuals who stop at nothing to help their communities in their greatest time of need. We commend all the #911Professionals and #EmergencyResponders in the midst of this catastrophe, as well as the many good Samaritans helping to bring hope to those most affected.

Guilford Metro 911 Answers Call to Help After Helene ?? https://lnkd.in/gHwnCfzi Thank you to #911Professionals in Guilford County, NC and all over the southeast who continue to #AnswerTheCall in the aftermath of Helene. At least 10 North Carolina counties have had to redirect their emergency calls to the Guilford Metro 911 as the region still reels from the devastation of the storm. "We're receiving everything from people wanting to do welfare checks on family members they haven't seen or heard from, but we're also doing medical calls, fire rescues…it runs the gamut," said Christine Moore, Deputy Director of Operations for Guilford Metro 911. "We expect this to last weeks, if not months." This is a great example of Next Generation 9-1-1 working as it should, because #NG911 makes it easier to shift the call burden between jurisdictions when an emergency arises. #ThankYou911 #HurricaneHelene #Asheville #911Heroes #NENATrained
