The Coalition for a proposed New England – Maritimes Offshore Energy Corridor (NEMOEC) is proud to be accepting new members! Today we have officially launched ‘Phase 2’ of our work to support the development of a shared offshore backbone #transmission corridor that directly connects US and Canadian #offshorewind resources. Our vision for transformative #interregional electricity infrastructure is to build a cleaner and more resilient regional grid while minimizing #stakeholder impacts and helping both regions meet their #renewableenergy needs. Phase 2 will take a deep dive into analyzing the economic growth potential resulting from this shared backbone approach. A new white paper will explore the economic impact of the Corridor, seeking to quantify the expected increase in offshore wind deployment and the associated economic benefits. As we continue to grow the tent, we are especially keen to bring in members of the offshore wind #supplychain, who will benefit from building a more robust and sustainable regional marketplace. New members of the #NEMOEC Coalition have the opportunity to build relationships with key stakeholders in the region through our collaborative efforts, shape the the debate around how the New England and Maritimes clean energy economy unfolds, and gain priority participation in webinars, workshops, and media opportunities as we promote the findings of the new whitepaper. Kudos to Larry Hughes for this thorough and informative analysis of the fundamental opportunity at the core of our proposal: bidirectional, interregionally connected grids for this region, like the approach advocated for by the Northeast Grid Planning Forum (NGPF), are essential to delivering a reliable and affordable clean energy future. Nova Scotia’s high-quality #offshorewind resource can play an essential role in supplying energy to its neighbors, while delivering significant value to the province through economic development and job creation - stay tuned for the results of Net Zero Atlantic’s socioeconomic study coming in 2025. Delivering this energy to New England via a subsea cable corridor that can be shared and networked with project developments in the US delivers an even bigger win for everyone in the region.
Quebec is facing two challenges: a decline in hydroelectric generation because of drought and an increase in demand for renewable electricity. In this article, Michael Godwin and I look at how Nova Scotia's planned five gigawatts of offshore wind could help Quebec and supply some of Quebec's New England customers.
