Turning the spotlight on Michigan’s minimum wage laws in 2025, there have been some changes that employers need to note. The first minimum wage increase took effect January 1 for individuals 18 years and older, raising the rate from $10.33 per hour to $10.56 per hour, while the tipped minimum wage rose from $3.93 to $4.01. But that’s not all. Last summer, the Michigan Supreme Court ruled that the Michigan Legislature acted unconstitutionally when it adopted a ballot initiative on minimum wages and subsequently amended it in the same session. This decision essentially reinstated the original terms of the ballot initiative. To give businesses some leeway (and perhaps the Legislature time to come to a bipartisan agreement), the Court delayed the effective date of the increases outlined in the ballot proposal until February 21. These additional updates in February include: minimum wage at $12.48 per hour; tipped minimum wage at $ 5.99 per hour; and minor minimum wage at $10.61 per hour. However, as lawmakers kick off the new year, they will be debating these pending changes, many of which impact servers and bartenders. They’ll also be tackling paid sick leave laws. As federal officials raise questions about government efficiency and job cuts, will they use a return-to-office policy as a tactic to ultimately thin out the federal pool of employees? Partner Deborah Brouwer recently sat down with Roop Raj on WJBK-TV FOX 2 Detroit’s political show “The Pulse” to discuss employment law from a government perspective and the implications of requiring federal employees to abandon their remote workspaces and return to the office five days a week. Partner Deborah Brouwer recently had the opportunity to talk to WJR 760 AM's Guy Gordon, Lloyd Jackson and Jamie Edmonds in response to an interesting verdict where a woman, who refused the COVID-19 vaccine during the pandemic and was subsequently fired, was awarded $12 million in damages. In the interview, Brouwer discussed a number of factors and legal options that employers can take into consideration to comply with state and federal laws, respect the health and safety of the workplace, and balance employee choice.
