Moms at Work is so excited to announce we have partnered with Deborah Hudson and Hudson Sinclair to offer free legal consults to support women who have been laid off during maternity leave. Okay here is the TLDR: Who is this for? Mothers who have been terminated from their place of employment while pregnant, on maternity leave or within 3 months of returning to work. Currently our legal partners are licensed to support clients in Ontario. Do I get all my legal costs covered? No. This is for a free (30 min) legal consult. We want to make sure that women understand their rights and are making informed choices. We hope that having this option helps. Do I need to make a certain amount of money to qualify? No. We will not ask for any proof of income. Is this forever? No. We will be offering this as a trial until Dec 31, 2024 and if successful will look at expanding the program. Now what? 1.     ?? American women typically earn 82 cents for every dollar earned by men. As Jessica Grose writes for The New York Times: "In a country where women are now a (slight) majority of the college-educated labor force and the annual earnings median for college degree holders is 55 percent more than that of those with high school diplomas, the stickiness of this gap is frustrating. While there are several factors at play, one of the key contributors to the gap is what’s known as the motherhood penalty and the corresponding fatherhood premium: Women’s pay decreases when they have children, while men’s pay increases." It’s a totally comprehensive, completely holistic support system for women and moms in the workforce AND the companies that employ them. When companies choose to work with The Motherhood Initiative, they get the best of both neli and ELIXR. ? ELIXR’s consulting and coaching services help them build organizational muscle around understanding motherhood, its impact on businesses, and how to close the gaps for working moms and their teams. ? neli’s platform gives moms the space to learn, share, and grow together, addressing the physical and emotional aspects of motherhood alongside corporate and career-focused content. Corporate leaders and career coaches work in tandem with doctors, therapists, and more to create content specific to working mothers and provide a holistic resource hub for the woman’s total well-being. ----------- There are so many fights that need to be fought in this space. I think, for me, that’s been one of the hardest things to navigate as a founder. Where do we focus? What do we do? How do we actually make an impact where it feels impossible?     Working moms IRL ??

    Real life peek behind the curtain on the child care shortage crisis affecting many families with young children in the U.S. Pictured: Command station one, basket of half folded laundry, and a baby holding station – all function no form. Our babysitter (AKA ‘nanny’, for those in fancier circles or of the British variety), takes Friday’s off. Rightfully so, she’s her own boss, running her own operations, she can make that decision. We continue to support her operations with our business (children), because she loves our business like it’s her own business, we trust her with our business, and have a longstanding deep relationship with her, which is so important when dealing with such precious material. Coast to coast, most childcare facilities are on a 12-18 month waitlist, often prioritizing existing families, and often plagued with their own issues of understaffing, making it hard to take in new children. Even if we chose to move our business elsewhere, it’s unlikely there’d be an immediate solution available. What’s a woman left to do, besides her best to make it work. We’re fortunate to have help from my mother-in-law when she’s available (grandparents are unsung, and unpaid hero’s), and my husband and I adjust schedules to help accommodate each other to make it through a Friday. If I didn’t have the ability and privilege to work from home on Friday’s, I don’t know what I’d do. That’s why it’s so important for companies to honor flexibility when possible, and to exercise compassion when it comes to caretaking. I’m glad to see more dialogue around this issue from platforms and strong voices like CARRY Media?     We recently interviewed Jillian Smith on the podcast and she shared that she received 16 weeks for maternity leave and then 8 weeks of transitional time which gave her 4 weeks back at 50% then 4 weeks back at 75%.
