Know the story of the hare and the tortoise? ?????? Virtually the same principle why metronomic chemotherapy may be your treatment of choice for your patient. Both graphs below picture virtually the size of the primary tumour and cumulative size of metastases in a mathematical model of functional maximum tolerated dose versus metronomic chemotherapy... In addition, metronomic chemotherapy has several upsides compared with some of the maximum tolerated dose chemo, coming back to the concept on individualised care in oncology and knowing your options. How much of our pet's future is in our hands? In human medicine, it is estimated that about 60% of diseases and deaths are linked to preventable factors—diet, exercise, and lifestyle choices. But have you ever wondered how many of the illnesses we see in pets are also preventable? Obesity, dental disease, and even some chronic conditions could be avoided with better education and proactive care. Are we, as vets, doing enough to help pet owners understand and prevent these risks? What do you think? Should owner education and disease prevention take a bigger role in pet care?

2 easy steps to reduce blood transfusion reactions in our dog patients: A recent study in the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine reveals that 8.9% of dogs receiving packed red blood cells (pRBC) suffer from transfusion reactions (TRs). Risk factors include using older blood, especially after 28 days, and transfusing larger volumes of pRBC, which can heighten the chances of severe febrile or hemolytic reactions. To mitigate these risks: 1. Calculate the necessary pRBC volume based on factors like the reason for anemia, current regeneration, the size and PCV of the recipient, and the PCV of the donor blood. 2. Utilize fresher pRBCs for transfusions whenever possible. #SAMEhubet #BloodTransfusion #CanineCare

How sturdy is your diagnosis of canine hypothyroidism? A recent study (Travail et al., 2024) assessed hypothyroidism diagnoses in 102 dogs treated at primary care practices. 45-58% of dogs treated with levothyroxine likely did not require it. Many dogs were diagnosed based on vague symptoms and non-specific tests. Thyroid testing should be reserved for dogs with a high likelihood of hypothyroidism, considering clinical signs and lab results. overdiagnosis is as costly and dangerous as underdiagnosis!
