This Women’s History Month, we’re spotlighting the leaders transforming lives through affordable housing and community development. Dee Williams, director of MaineStream Finance, a subsidiary of Penquis CAP a NeighborWorks network organization, is one of them. With nearly 20 years in the finance industry, Dee is expanding access to homeownership for low- to moderate-income residents. Her latest initiative, the Manufactured Turnkey Loan, is helping Mainers secure affordable homes, complete with land, a well, septic system and more, for far below the state’s median price. Her leadership is creating real change. Free tax prep can open the door to lasting financial stability. On the Tule River Reservation in the heart of California’s Central Valley, nearly 100 participants gathered to deepen partnerships, learn from tribal leaders, and explore housing solutions that honor Native culture. Hosted by NeighborWorks America and the Native CDFI Network, the Native Partnership Gathering focused on expanding access to affordable housing and financial resources for tribal communities. With only two Native CDFIs in a state home to 110 federally recognized tribes, the need is clear. Site visits to neighborhoods like Nupchi Xo’ Oy and the Tule River Justice Center showcased the power of community-driven development.
