?? ?????????????????????? ??????????????'?? ???????? ???? ?????? ???????? ???? ???????????? ?? In 1988, a mother and her young son received their green cards after years of uncertainty. She built a life in Washington, working hard to support him. For years, she considered applying for citizenship, but her priority was always his well-being—especially after he lost his sight in 2000. In 2023, she finally took the step to become a U.S. citizen. At Neighborhood House, we helped her apply and prepare for her interview in Spanish, ensuring she could navigate the process with confidence. When she told us about her son, we helped him apply as well, working with his doctor to secure accommodations for his disability. By the end of 2024, both mother and son had taken their oaths—finally securing their futures after 30+ years. ?? But if proposed changes to the N-400 application had been in place, their journey could have been blocked. These changes would require applicants to provide detailed information about parents, siblings, and past spouses—even in cases of estrangement or abuse. For this family, that would have meant reestablishing contact with people they purposefully left behind, putting their safety and peace of mind at risk. As we celebrate ???????????? ???????? ??????????, we recognize our dedicated DOJ Accredited Representatives — non-attorney professionals whose work reflects the core values of social work. They help families navigate barriers to citizenship and these proposed changes would make their work even harder. ?? ???????? ???????? ?????????? ??????????!
