I help high school principals in NYC increase their Algebra I Regents pass rates in 20 weeks through in-person, incentivized tutoring programs.

?? ??????’?? ?????? ?????????????? ???????????????????? ??????’?? ?????????? ?????? ???????? ?????????????? ?? "Change is imperative and the status quo is unacceptable when fewer than half of our Black and brown students passed the Algebra I Regents exam." I couldn’t agree more. But swapping in a new curriculum—???????????????????????? ???????? under the ?????? ???????????? initiative—doesn’t address the real issue: too many students enter Algebra I without the foundational math skills they need to succeed. Teachers are already sounding the alarm: ?? "The curriculum assumes too much prior knowledge...[they need] to supplement it with remedial lessons and additional problems." ?? The real issue isn’t which Algebra I textbook students use—it’s that too many arrive unprepared because they never mastered: ? Basic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) ? Fractions, decimals, and percents ? Prealgebra fundamentals like negative numbers, variables, and ratios ?? That’s where Neighborhood Educational Partners makes a difference. We provide: ?? ??????????-?????????? ???????????????? to strengthen core math skills ?? ???????????????????? ?????????????? so students can build confidence before Algebra I ?? ??????-????-?????? ?????????????????????????? to ensure no student falls through the cracks The best Algebra I curriculum in the world ??????’?? ???????????? if students don’t have the math foundation to succeed. NYC needs ????????, ?????????? ????????????????????????—not just a new curriculum. ?? What do you think? How can we better support students before Algebra I? When teaching writing, there's a well-known saying: "?????? ?????????????? ???? ??????????????????." ?? The idea is that the real work happens in revision—going back, identifying gaps, and strengthening weak areas. At Neighborhood Educational Partners, we have a similar saying: ?????? ?????????????? ???? ????????????????????. The reason most students struggle with Algebra I isn’t the algebra itself—it’s gaps in their ???????????????????? ?????????????????????? that hold them back. If students don’t have a strong grasp of fundamental math concepts, no amount of factoring, solving for x, or graphing equations will truly stick. Before students can succeed in Algebra I, they need to????????????? ?????? ???????????????? ????????????: ?? ?????????? ???????????????????? – Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division ?? ?????????? ???? ???????????????????? – Knowing when to multiply, divide, add, or subtract ?? ???????????????? & ?????????????????? – Understanding how numbers break down and relate ?? ???????????????? & ???????????? – Making sense of proportions and comparisons At Neighborhood Educational Partners, we don’t just push students through Algebra I—we strengthen their foundations so they can confidently tackle the Regents exam (and future math courses). The truth is, if a student is struggling with Algebra I, the real solution isn’t just more algebra—it’s ?????????? ???????? ???? ???????????????????? ?????? ?????????????? ???? ??????????. ?? Want to help your students build a stronger foundation? Let’s talk. #MathEducation #Algebra #Prealgebra #RegentsExam #MathTutoring #StudentSuccess #EducationalEquity

In the world of high school math in New York City, there is a group of students who often face an uphill battle—the Algebra I Regents re-takers. These students have already attempted the exam at least once and come up short. Their paths to this point are diverse: some are English Language Learners (ELLs), perhaps newly arrived in New York City, adjusting to a different education system and a different life while trying to master equations. Others may come from more vulnerable populations, such as those impacted by the justice system, or those experiencing housing insecurity. While their backgrounds differ, one common thread unites these re-takers: gaps in their prealgebra foundations. Without a solid grasp of fundamental arithmetic, fractions, decimals, percents, and basic algebraic reasoning, the leap to Algebra I is simply too great. When students falter on their first math Regents exam, often in 8th or 9th grade, they may not fully understand the stakes—that without a math Regents credit, they cannot earn their high school diploma. Yet, despite this fact, many are advanced into Geometry or Algebra II, where the content is even more demanding and success becomes increasingly unlikely. The reality is this: for many of these students, passing the Algebra I Regents exam is their best shot at fulfilling their math graduation requirement. Unlike Geometry or Algebra II, Algebra I is the exam that, with the right targeted support, re-takers can absolutely conquer. But that support needs to be intentional. It needs to diagnose and rebuild those missing prealgebra skills, while simultaneously building the student's confidence with Algebra I material. Getting re-takers over the Algebra I hurdle is not just about a single test—it's about giving students the opportunity to walk across that graduation stage. It’s about opening doors that might otherwise remain closed. When we invest in these students and meet them where they are, we set them up not only to pass but to persist—in math, in school, and in life. At Neighborhood Educational Partners, we’ve built a high-impact tutoring program specifically designed for these re-takers. The first half of our curriculum focuses solely on pre-algebra foundations to build skills and confidence before diving into the content covered on the Regents exam. We believe that by addressing the root of the struggle, we can empower students to succeed—both on the exam and beyond. Have you worked with Algebra I re-takers or faced similar challenges in helping students overcome foundational gaps? I’d love to hear your thoughts—please comment below or send me a message to share your experiences! #MathEducation #HighImpactTutoring #AlgebraIRegents #ELLStudents #MigrantStudents #EducationEquity #StudentSuccess #PreAlgebra #FoundationalSkills #GraduationMatters #NeighborhoodEducationalPartners

Post-pandemic, chronic absenteeism has spiked. How do we get students back in the classroom? As a tutoring provider, this is something we care about deeply - because without attendance, we don't have a program. So how do we get attendance and keep it? In our latest blog post, we break down the difference between attendance awards and attendance incentives. While both are well-intentioned, the research shows that only one truly gets results - while the other may actually be discouraging your attendance. ?? Hit the link below to check out our new blog and learn more! ?? Interested in talking attendance in your school or program? It was an honor to meet and discuss after-school tutoring with Congressman Jamaal Bowman today at PS 53 in the Bronx! Congressman Bowman was instrumental in securing funding to support the Every Child and Family is Known Initiative (ECFIK), which is spearheaded by the Mayor’s Office and the NYC Children’s Cabinet. According to the Harvard EdRedesign Lab, the aspiration of ECFIK is “to ensure that every child and family living in a shelter will be part of an integrated and comprehensive support system that enables their educational success, nurtured and guided by a one-on-one relationship with a caring adult.” King Education LLC is very proud to partner with this Initiative as a community vendor to NYC DOE, offering our math tutoring services at high schools in the Bronx to support youth who are experiencing homelessness. We are pleased to provide this needed support to ensure these young people can achieve their academic goals. Thank you Congressman Jamaal Bowman and Joshua Laub for your leadership on this initiative!

Post-pandemic, more and more states (including NY) are lowering their proficiency standards to try to paper over widespread, unaddressed learning losses in literacy and math. ?? “Below basic” proficiency is being rebranded as “approaching.” “Basic” proficiency is now “developing.” And so on. ????♂? When we shift these goal posts, what’s the result? We mislead parents. We lie to ourselves. And worst of all, we display a lack of belief in each and every student. ?? It doesn’t have to be this way. Rather than lower the proficiency standards on a Regents exam, how about we actually help the students to learn and pass it on their own? ?? Wouldn’t that not only give them the skills they need to succeed in life – but also give them a huge boost of confidence and raise their self-esteem in the process? ?? This isn’t a pipe dream – we know high-impact tutoring is THE gold standard for getting students from EVERY background back on track. ?????? We know it works because we’ve done it. How did over 150 students from some of the lowest-income and most justice-impacted neighborhoods across NYC – Harlem, the South Bronx, Bed-Stuy, East New York, Brownsville, Jamaica, Queens, and North Shore Staten Island – achieve pass rates on their Algebra I Regents exams that absolutely crushed the NYS and district averages? ?? There’s nothing miraculous about it. All it takes is the right approach: - Low student-to-teacher ratios (~4:1) ?????? - Incentivized after-school programming ???? - Gamified curriculum ?? - Highly qualified, professional, consistent tutors throughout the duration of the cohort ?? What do you think? Do we need to settle for less? Or can we find new and innovative ways to implement high-impact tutoring for our young people?
