Time outdoors is time well spent.

关于我们

Our mission is stewardship of the state’s fish, wildlife, park, and outdoor recreation resources in the best long-term interests of the people and those resources, and our vision is to provide access to healthy land, waters and wildlife that inspire people for generations to come. To do that, we tap into our core values: ? Integrity — We believe in operating openly and holding ourselves to the highest ethical standards. ? Accountability — We believe that we are responsible to current and future generations for the resources we protect and conserve. ? Balance — We believe in earnestly considering the needs and perspectives of the people we serve and the resources we protect and conserve. ? Stewardship — We believe in responsibly managing the resources entrusted to our care. Our agency is dedicated to conserving Nebraska’s natural resources, state parks and wildlife, and providing recreational opportunities to all — because the outdoors is for everyone. We develop programs and resources relevant to all constituents and foster a workforce that is welcoming and inclusive for all. We know diversity is critical to the resiliency and strength of our native ecosystems but also to our mission and success. We were established by the Legislature in 1901 and are overseen by a board of nine commissioners. Among the many duties of the Commission and staff are: ? establishing hunting seasons and regulations for game species; ? managing Nebraska’s state parks, state recreation areas and other public lands; ? managing the fisheries at numerous public lakes across the state; ? helping landowners establish good conservation practices on their land; ? working to conserve Nebraska’s threatened and endangered species; ? and providing resources for those who wish to learn to enjoy the outdoors. We are committed to the idea that time spent outdoors — whether hunting, fishing, hiking, biking, birdwatching, canoeing, camping, or something else — is time well spent.

  • Spotted: Sandhill cranes in Nebraska. ?? Each spring, Nebraska hosts one of the most remarkable wildlife spectacles in North America and the largest gatherings of cranes in the world. From mid-February through early April, approximately one million sandhill cranes stage in Nebraska, feeding in cornfields and wet meadows by day and roosting in the shallow flowing waters of the Platte River at night. The best viewing of the cranes occurs around mid to late March. Most crane-watchers visit areas between Grand Island and Kearney, where the largest concentrations occur and resources like viewing platforms and tours are available. • “There was a time when I would read about bighorn sheep captures in the local newspaper. I remember thinking it was cool and wondering what it would be like to work with wildlife. Now, I have been involved in bighorn sheep captures and collaring efforts for 13 years. I still enjoy the thrill and process of it all. There are many duties assigned to teams during a capture. For several years, my primary duty has been fitting sheep with GPS/VHF collars. This includes making sure the frequency is working, the collar has a numbered tag, the hardware is installed correctly, and most importantly, that the collar fits the animal properly. Once the sheep is released, the collar collects data that helps us monitor the health, status, and movements of Nebraska’s bighorn sheep herds. Working with wildlife is just one aspect of my job as a wildlife biologist with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. I also manage several wildlife management areas, gather data through wildlife population surveys, assist with wildlife depredation and crop damage, work check stations during hunting seasons, collect disease samples and generate harvest recommendations for big game hunting seasons. My job is rarely monotonous; each day brings something new. One of the most rewarding parts of my work is sharing the agency’s successes with others who are equally passionate about Nebraska’s wildlife and outdoors. I truly enjoy what I do and am proud to be part of a team that is committed to caring for our state’s wildlife for years to come.” - Justin Powell, Wildlife Biologist If you're passionate about our state's wildlife and wild spaces, consider joining our team. • You know what rocks? Improved fish habitat. How do we improve fish habitat in Nebraska? With rocks, cedar trees and more. This winter, our Southeast District fisheries crew is using reclaimed concrete and cedar trees to enhance habitat at Wildwood Lake WMA and Standing Bear Lake. Here's how: ?? Fisheries staff place items such as concrete and cedar trees in specific areas on the ice. ?? As temperatures increase, the new habitat falls through the ice, creating long-lasting underwater structures that benefit fish. These improvements support healthier aquatic ecosystems and provide anglers with a better fishing experience. Take advantage of these projects by downloading our habitat maps here: https://lnkd.in/gj4UKMR7 ??: Fisheries staff

  • This week is National Invasive Species Awareness Week. ? Nebraska is faced with many invasive species challenges - habitat degradation due to noxious weeds, tree loss due to insect damage and reduced water recreation opportunities due to invasive mussel introductions, among others. Prevention is the best tool available for combating invasive species. Help reduce the risk of invasive species impacts to Nebraska's natural resources with these tips: ??????????, ??????????, ?????? - Prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species by cleaning, draining and drying watercraft before entering another water body. ????????, ??????????, ???? - Stop invasive species in your tracks by removing plants, animals and mud from boots and gear before and after outdoor adventures. ???????? ???? ?????????? ?????? ?????? ???? - Buy firewood where you'll burn it, buy certified heat-treated firewood, or gather firewood on site (where permitted) to prevent the spread of invasive species.
