NEEDED aims to deliver the next generation of reference European models and methods at TRL4 to estimate present and future aircraft emissions (pollutants and noise) and the number of people affected by them. It responds to the HORIZON-CL5_2022-D5-01-12 topic while pursuing EUROCONTROL’s commitment to the EU’s vision for a Single European Sky.

Air travel is essential, but it also comes with environmental costs. One of the most significant impacts is air pollution around airports. That's where the NEEDED project comes in. We're collecting precise data on air quality near airports to understand the impact of aircraft emissions, identify hotspots, and develop solutions. By using advanced monitoring equipment and data analysis tools, we're gathering accurate measurements and working with industry partners to implement sustainable solutions. Together, we're supporting the development of new aircraft technologies that reduce emissions and improve air quality. Is sustainable #Aviation possible? The aviation industry faces a significant challenge: reducing its environmental impact while continuing to meet the growing demand for air travel. But is sustainable aviation truly achievable? Although there is no precise theory or certainty, several promising avenues are being explored: - Sustainable Aviation Fuels: These fuels, made from renewable sources, can significantly reduce carbon emissions. - Electric and Hybrid Aircraft: Advancements in battery technology are making electric and hybrid aircraft more feasible. - Optimized Flight Paths: Reducing fuel consumption and emissions through more efficient flight routes. - Aircraft Design Improvements: Innovations in aircraft design can enhance fuel efficiency and reduce noise pollution. The future of sustainable aviation lies in innovation. By investing in research and development, we can unlock the technologies needed to make air travel more environmentally friendly. What are your thoughts on sustainable aviation? Let's test your knowledge! Did you know the correct answer to our question? In the aviation sector, most greenhouse gas emissions come from the use of fossil fuels, mainly paraffin, which is used to power aircraft engines. When these fuels are burned, they release carbon dioxide (CO₂) and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, contributing significantly to global warming. In fact, aviation is one of the sectors with the highest per capita emissions, as each flight emits huge amounts of CO₂ per passenger kilometer travelled. To reduce the environmental impact of the sector, NEEDED project studies new methods and solutions for improving the quality of air intake at airports. Assuming that COVID-19 is now behind us, when will air traffic exceed pre-pandemic levels? A recent publication from the Università degli Studi di Udine and AIT Austrian Institute of Technology on Elsevier suggests that a more relevant question might be: can air traffic safely exceed those levels, given the increasing focus on reducing pollution? To answer, new models are necessary. As a global leader in scientific information and analysis, Elsevier publishes articles that highlight studies with significant societal impact. This time, it has acknowledged the valuable contributions of various researchers affiliated with the NEEDED project. The paper examines the work of our partners, highlighting also how it intertwines with the entire scientific community. For example, OpenSky Network stands out for providing open flight tracking data for research purposes with time intervals as small as one second. Additionally, Zurich Airport Ltd actively supports this type of research by providing resources for scientific advancements and valuable information for model validation. Follow the link below for a deeper look at the project’s methodology and approach, the traffic data and model simulations at Zurich Airport, and some ideas for future developments. https://lnkd.in/dXZqwRMs Credits: Marco Pretto, Lorenzo Dorbolò, Pietro Giattanasio, alessandro zanon, Università degli Studi di Udine, AIT Austrian Institute of Technology

Reducing emissions and noise: Why it is so important? The impact of air travel on our local communities and the global environment cannot be ignored. Excessive emissions and noise pollution pose significant risks to our health and well-being. Why it matters: - Health concerns: Exposure to air pollution and noise can lead to respiratory problems, cardiovascular diseases, and sleep disturbances. - Environmental damage: Emissions contribute to climate change, while noise pollution can disrupt ecosystems and wildlife. - Quality of life: A cleaner and quieter environment improves the overall quality of life for everyone. Follow NEEDED project to stay updated on the topic!

Do you know what is an Advisory Boards? Like all European-funded projects, NEEDED relies on a strong network of partners to push the boundaries of aviation innovation. These partnerships ensure collaboration across industries, research institutions, and regulatory bodies, driving sustainable solutions. Among all partners, the project has a special agreement with the Advisory Board (also called AB): Here’s a more in-depth version of the text with an expanded focus on the importance of data and partners: The data gathered by Advisory Boards often represent the concerns and needs of diverse stakeholders, from industry leaders to affected communities. This feedback loop is invaluable for aligning project objectives with practical, actionable insights. For instance, UEACNA (Union Européenne contre les Nuisances des Avions) plays a key role in NEEDED project. Their input guarantees that the solutions developed are grounded in the actual concerns of those most affected by aviation. In the NEEDED project, each partner contributes equally to its success. Whether it's EUROCONTROL providing technical expertise or UECNA representing community concerns, all partners are essential to achieving NEEDED's goal: to revolutionize how aircraft emissions and noise are estimated, ensuring a more sustainable and quieter aviation future. Stay tuned as we continue to explore the future of sustainable aviation! 🌍✈️
