Our capstone students toured the Edison Water Filtration Plant to get a better real-world understanding of the spatial and process needs for their capstone design project. Thanks to Eric Horvath and Becca Plantz from the City of South Bend and Paul Glotzbach and Troy Casey from United Consulting for hosting the tour and mentoring the students!

Over Fall Break, Professor Jeremy Fein, with Biological Sciences Professor Gary Lamberti, co-led 14 Environmental Engineering and Environmental Science undergraduate students on a combined geology-biology field trip to the Galapagos Islands. The trip is a part of a 2 credit semester-long course. The islands are an ideal location for observing the interplay between geology and biology, and for observing how geology and geomorphology can influence evolution. Plus we saw tons of very cool animals and rocks!

Ph.D. candidate Hannah Spero (University of Notre Dame) and professors Andrew Kennedy and Melissa Berke just completed the pre-winter deployment for the Naughton-funded storm-driven coastal boulder experiments on Inishmaan, Ireland! This year’s fieldwork marks an exciting continuation of research into storm impacts on coastal boulder transport.

OCTOBER RECAP Here’s what ASCE has been up to this past month: 1 & 2) Our October General meeting was a success and we had Dr. Brian Smith give a presentation on his work in structural engineering and forensics. 3) Our Sheer Studs Athletic teams are looking to WIN this year! 4) A few of our seniors organized and held a community engagement fair on civil engineering with the Penn-Harrison-Madison School. 5) A few of our members this past week attended a tour of the North Central Branch Water Treatment Plant here in South Bend. This October has been exciting! And we’re ready for what the rest of 2024 has in store for us! Go Irish ?? ???

Teaching #historicpreservation to engineering and construction management students... Thanks to Fr. Mike Ryan, C.S.C. (ND Civil Engineering Class of 2012) for hosting our #ndmeng students for a behind-the-scenes tour of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart at the University of Notre Dame. The neo-gothic church was constructed between 1870 and 1888. It has 44 large stained glass windows and murals completed over a 17-year period by the Vatican painter?Luigi Gregori. The basilica bell tower is 230 feet (70?m) high, making it the tallest university chapel in America.?It is a contributing building in Notre Dame's historic district listed on the?National Register of Historic Places of the National Park Service. https://lnkd.in/gjTXqxDG)
