This past Friday, our?senior design and MEng capstone classes reviewed the importance of professional licensure and certification, including the process for applying and preparing for licensure examinations. We also reviewed technical writing skills and recommendations for students in their early careers, including resumes, project write-ups, mentorship, continuing education, and career experimentation.

Our capstone students toured the Edison Water Filtration Plant to get a better real-world understanding of the spatial and process needs for their capstone design project. Thanks to Eric Horvath and Becca Plantz from the City of South Bend and Paul Glotzbach and Troy Casey from United Consulting for hosting the tour and mentoring the students!
Our capstone design students gave their "elevator pitch" project updates this past Friday. We want to thank the following companies for providing mentorship for the student projects: Black & Veatch, Bulley & Andrews, Buro Happold, Clark Construction Group, Gannett Fleming, Lochmueller Group (x2), McCormick Engineering, LLC, Severud Associates, American Structurepoint (x2), Thornton Tomasetti, United Consulting, Indianapolis, IN and City of South Bend, The Walsh Group - Walsh Construction & Archer Western, Westwood Professional Services, and WSP.
Over Fall Break, Professor Jeremy Fein, with Biological Sciences Professor Gary Lamberti, co-led 14 Environmental Engineering and Environmental Science undergraduate students on a combined geology-biology field trip to the Galapagos Islands. The trip is a part of a 2 credit semester-long course. The islands are an ideal location for observing the interplay between geology and biology, and for observing how geology and geomorphology can influence evolution. Plus we saw tons of very cool animals and rocks!
PhD student Alejandro Martin-Linares and Prof. Rob Nerenberg attended the?IWA Biofilms 2024?conference in Shanghai, China the week of October 21.?Alejandro presented his research on fungal membrane-aerated biofilm reactors (MABRs), and Rob Nerenberg presented a keynote on the characteristics of detached biofilm from MABRs.
Ph.D. candidate Hannah Spero (University of Notre Dame) and professors Andrew Kennedy and Melissa Berke just completed the pre-winter deployment for the Naughton-funded storm-driven coastal boulder experiments on Inishmaan, Ireland! This year’s fieldwork marks an exciting continuation of research into storm impacts on coastal boulder transport.

OCTOBER RECAP Here’s what ASCE has been up to this past month: 1 & 2) Our October General meeting was a success and we had Dr. Brian Smith give a presentation on his work in structural engineering and forensics. 3) Our Sheer Studs Athletic teams are looking to WIN this year! 4) A few of our seniors organized and held a community engagement fair on civil engineering with the Penn-Harrison-Madison School. 5) A few of our members this past week attended a tour of the North Central Branch Water Treatment Plant here in South Bend. This October has been exciting! And we’re ready for what the rest of 2024 has in store for us! Go Irish ?? ???
