Restoring reason, beauty, and truth

关于我们

At the University of Notre Dame, we educate the architectural leaders of tomorrow to address critical issues facing the world through the study of classical and traditional architecture and urbanism. Human flourishing necessitates sustainable development patterns that stand the test of time, facilitate a strong social infrastructure, provide a platform for general prosperity, and leave a better world for future generations. We believe these aspirations are best achieved by the design of adaptable, beautiful, and durable buildings and places. We draw precedent from traditional architectural, landscape, and urban forms that embody a human scale, respond to varied contexts, are calibrated for local climates, and relate to the material and spiritual needs of the varied societies of the world in a form specific to their culture. At Notre Dame, architecture is taught as an integrated discipline and profession that includes simultaneous instruction in a discrete set of traditional subjects: drawing, history and theory, building and environmental technology, design studio, and relevant topics in various peripheral disciplines. These subjects are understood as essential and coequal. They are delivered to the students to the greatest degree in combination.

  • Point 1: Architecture and Nature Over the centuries, architecture has served as the means of sheltering people, their enterprises, and institutions. It has provided stability, beauty, and meaning to human communities while allowing them access to the bounty of nature. Our program is grounded in the premise that architecture is the foundation of an evolving human habitat that must always develop in harmony with nature. Pictured: Stephanie Kubus ’20, thesis project, “Architectural Dignity in Death: A Proposal for a Funerary Complex in Latrobe, Pennsylvania,” which won the Henry Adams for Undergraduates Award, Honorable Mention Award for Design Excellence in Architecture, Jury's Choice (Undergraduate), and the Rambusch Prize. Her thesis focused on the combination of architecture and the natural landscape to create a commemorative space that emphasizes the dignity of life and death, wherein lies the symbolic power. Point 9: Building the Skills of Observation and Judgment We believe that learning by seeing and experiencing an architecture, urbanism, and landscape of time, place, and beauty exposes the underlying values and resilience of societies beyond merely the visible or tangible. It eventually impresses on students the need to become responsible for their design choices and actions. Pictured above: In a counterproposal for the national WWI memorial that was under construction from 2016 to 2021, Julian David Murphy ’20 aimed to “provide a setting in the nation’s capital in which to understand the sacrifice of the conflict through commemorative ritual.” The design presents two approaches to commemoration, one through the museum’s preservation of artifacts and the other through the plaza to serve as a venue for public interaction. This project was awarded the Ferguson and Shamamian Graduate Prize and the Leon Battista Alberti Award. The student work highlighted is representative of the 12 points featured in An Architectural Pedagogy for the Twenty-First Century. We are thrilled to share our latest paper, "Urban embodied carbon assessment: methodology?and insights from analyzing over a million buildings in Chicago," published in ?Carbon Management [Read the full text here, open access] https://lnkd.in/ghFKERC6 Kudos to my great Ph.D. student Siavash Ghorbany Here are the four key innovations: (1)?Granular Evaluation of Embodied Carbon: The research introduces a novel empirical framework for assessing the embodied carbon emissions of urban building stocks with high granularity. This granular approach allows for a precise understanding of emissions at the individual building level, which is essential for informed urban carbon mitigation planning. (2)?Use of Archetype Models: The study employs the archetype method to model 157 different building types based on structural, material, and geometric attributes. This method allows for the creation of a comprehensive dataset that links individual building characteristics to their embodied carbon impacts, facilitating more accurate and representative analyses. (3)?3D Emissions Visualization Tool: This tool provides an intuitive and interactive way to understand the spatial dynamics of urban emissions, allowing stakeholders to identify emissions-intensive zones and key areas for intervention. The visualization capabilities enhance the ability of policymakers and urban planners to make data-driven decisions for low-carbon urban development. (4)?Sensitivity Analysis for Policy Insights: This analysis demonstrates that extending building lifespans to 80 years and reducing building sizes by 20% can significantly lower carbon emissions. By providing actionable data and scenarios, the study offers valuable insights for developing effective policies and strategies to mitigate urban carbon emissions over the long term. The methodology used not only enhances our understanding of urban carbon emissions but also equips policymakers and urban planners with the data needed to make informed decisions to mitigate these emissions effectively. Thanks for the funding support from # National Science Foundation (NSF) and support from # Notre Dame Research Hopefully, this work will shed light on future AI/Data-driven embodied carbon and environmental impact assessment.

Point 11: Notre Dame in Rome “We consider the year of study in Rome as the cornerstone of the school’s pedagogy. Rome presents the most complete spectrum of projects ever built across 2,500 years of history: domestic and monumental buildings, public and private gardens, and civic infrastructure. Students are encouraged to understand these as living precedents and discern their importance in the design of the public and private realm.” Pictured: Samanta (Xiaoyun) Zhuang ’21 thesis project highlights the cultural importance of the Gazometro building built in 1937 in the Ostiense district in Rome, Italy. The goal of the project:? “The Gazometro, like the people associated with it, went through hardship to find its place in the neighborhood. They withstood many more hardships to be accepted, understood, and eventually loved.” To show this relationship, Zhuang’s presentation tracked the use of the building throughout the decades to support industrialization, as a backdrop in movies, a location within poetry, and more. This project titled “L’Accademia Gazometro dell’Arte Gastronomica,” was awarded the Alpha Rho Chi Medal and the Ralph Thomas Sollitt Award. “The story of Gary is not finished.” — Marianne Cusato, Director of the Housing and Community Regeneration Initiative at the Notre Dame School of Architecture Over the next ten years, architecture faculty at the University of Notre Dame will partner with the city of Gary, Indiana to revitalize and reimagine its downtown Broadway corridor. “They’re going to help us create an attractive, walkable city, which will reinforce our sense of community and vastly improve the quality of life for our residents,” said alumna Carla Morgan, who worked to orchestrate the partnership with the city's Corporation Counsel. “I’m proud to have graduated from a university that not only instills character in its students, but exhibits it by doing these kinds of projects in Indiana and Southern Michigan.” Learn more about these next steps for regional impact, community outcomes and more: https://lnkd.in/eadWVQTC Photo Credit: Matt Cashore

Point 4: Practice and Stewardship “We encourage our students to think of their design additions to the built and natural environment as ennobling and sustaining human life, acting with reverence for the planet, and inspiring a commitment to the long-term prospects of the diverse cultures of the world.” Pictured above: Juan Esteban Salazar ’21, thesis project, "New England Coastal Hotel in Mystic, Connecticut," which won the Dean’s Undergraduate Award for Design Excellence in Architecture. His thesis states, "Employing the vernacular language in architecture can support community resilience. It involves studying, engaging with, and developing a picture of community identity amid social, economic, and environmental change, while planning for future needs and uses."
