“At the University of Notre Dame, our researchers work to serve our nation in countless ways. They are developing innovations like semiconductor chips that are the backbone of our economy. They’re protecting us from emerging infectious diseases and formulating the next generation of wireless technology. They’re ensuring we have artificial intelligence that is safe and trustworthy. They are bringing people together and informing public debates. In these and other ways, they live out our mission to be a ‘powerful means for doing good in this country.’ And the strong partnership we’ve always had with the federal government has been key to this.” —Jeff Rhoads, Vice President for Research
As one of America’s leading research institutions, Notre Dame has long been at the forefront of finding answers to the most pressing questions facing our communities. With our unique mission to be a force for good, Notre Dame researchers are making discoveries that make our nation healthier, safer, and more resilient. Funding for R&D isn't a gift to academia. It's vital to U.S. security. In a bipartisan op-ed in The Washington Post, Sen. Todd Young (R-IN) and Matt Pottinger, chair of the China program at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD) and former deputy national security advisor, argue that for the U.S. to maintain its technological edge over China, policymakers must sufficiently fund federal investment in basic and applied science research. "The United States' biotechnology innovators, our electronics wizards and our military leaders uniformly point to the importance of a strong science-and-technology ecosystem that starts with the university." Public funding through agencies like the National Science Foundation and the Defense Department leads to research driven by curiosity, not profit. Funding research isn't a federal handout to help sustain academia, but a "vital ingredient in our innovation future, economic and global competitiveness, and national security." Poverty reduction programs have lifted millions out of extreme poverty, cutting global poverty by over 65% since 1990. However, these efforts often come at an environmental cost–contributing to deforestation, pollution, and deeper economic inequalities for communities near forestes. Researchers at the University of Notre Dame - Keough School of Global Affairs are addressing this challenge head-on. Focused on rural areas of the Global South–where 90% of the 600 million people in extreme poverty live–they are testing innovative solutions to reduce poverty while protecting natural resources, including: ?? Supporting community forestry businesses ?? Providing entrepreneurship training ?? Incentivising carbon storage ?? Developing new enforcement tools This interdisciplinary team will translate their findings into actionable policy recommendations, equipping governments and organizations with tools to enact lasting poverty alleviation without compromising the environment. On #WorldWaterDay, we highlight the vital role of clean water in protecting public health. ???? At the University of Notre Dame, Jennifer Tank is leading research to understand how antimicrobial resistance (AMR) spreads through streams and rivers–an urgent environmental and public health challenge. AMR infections are a growing global threat, fueled by the overuse of antibiotics, particularly in agriculture. When livestock manure, rich in antimicrobial resistance genes, enters waterways, these genes can spread in ways we don't yet fully understand. Notre Dame researchers are studying how environmental factors–like light, leaf litter, pharmaceuticals, and land use–influence the movement of these genes in streams and rivers, helping to inform strategies to mitigate their impact. By advancing research on AMR in aquatic ecosystems, Notre Dame is working to safeguard both environmental and human health–one stream at a time. ??
