DWS presented a special training event, the “Sector Partnership Academy,” on Feb. 6, 2025, at Central Carolina Community College in Sanford. Subtitled “Yes, You CAN Do This with a Sector Partnership,” the event brought together about 70 workforce development experts and partners from across the state. According to DWS Industry and Workforce Programs Supervisor Elisabeth Muehlemann, “the event was designed to foster collaboration across organizations, as well as across regions, around industry-led sector partnerships…It was a good mix of workforce, education, nonprofit, and economic development partners that were all working together collaboratively throughout the day.” Jim Flock, the co-founder of the Cape Fear Manufacturing Partnership (which now boasts 72 companies involved), and NENC Career Pathways Coordinator Brandi Bragg were among the presenters, illustrating best practices in establishing sector partnerships. John Metcalf, president of Workforce Systems Associates, facilitated the academy. Some of the topics covered included strategic planning, creating a logic model, employer engagement, integrating career pathways and sector partnerships, and tips for sustaining a partnership.
