Dr. Rachel Sassone, DVM, CVA, a veterinarian from Johnston County, was the first recipient of the NCVMA Claire Holley Leadership Grant and attended the AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association) Veterinary Leadership Conference last week in Chicago. "I'm incredibly grateful to have been awarded the first Claire Holley Leadership Grant," said Dr. Sassone. "I'm deeply grateful to Claire Holley, whose 17 years of dedicated service as NCVMA Executive Director fostered a legacy of strong leadership within our organization. Attending conferences like AVMA VLC is crucial for our profession to continue fostering a supportive and collaborative environment within organized veterinary medicine." The newly created grant will afford an annual opportunity for one NCVMA member to attend the?AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association) Veterinary?Leadership?Conference?along with the NC delegation. Members should watch for information about next year's application process in early fall. "This invaluable experience provided me with the opportunity for both professional and personal growth," said Dr. Sassone. "I forged meaningful connections that will undoubtedly benefit the NCVMA and our efforts to support North Carolina veterinarians."

North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association had an amazing delegation at last week's AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association) Veterinary Leadership Conference in Chicago. Attendees took part in classes focused on developing leadership skills, and attended district caucus and House of Delegate sessions to see how decisions are made at the national level. When not in session, they had the opportunity to network with leaders from other state and national organizations. Pictured, left to right: Dr. Rachel Sassone, DVM, CVA, District 4 rep and Claire Holley Leadership Grant recipient; Dr. Karyn Smith, DVM, MPH, in-coming president; Dr. Paige Harrington, DVM, vice-president; Jennifer Kendrick, Executive Director; Dr. Shannon Foy, AVMA alternate delegate for NC; and Dr. Liliya Nusbaum, recent graduate representative. Other board members also present at the conference, but not pictured, were Dr. Steven Stelma, AVMA delegate for North Carolina and Dr. Katharine Holder, District 4 representative.

In our latest episode, Dr. Shannon Bass introduces a term that’s often overlooked but deeply relevant:?Moral Injury. In November, the NCVMA Board of Directors voted to join the American Veterinary Medical Association, state and national veterinary associations, and allied groups in opposing the new veterinary midlevel practitioner position. You can read more about the AVMA position below.?
State, district, territory, and allied veterinary associations across the profession are joining the AVMA in voicing strong opposition to creating a new veterinary midlevel practitioner (MLP). In fact, all 50 state veterinary associations, plus those representing DC and Puerto Rico, have now indicated their formal opposition to the MLP.
