The National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN) was created by Congress in 2000 as part of the Children’s Health Act to raise the standard of care and increase access to services for children and families who experience or witness traumatic events. This unique network of frontline providers, family members, researchers, and national partners is committed to changing the course of children’s lives by improving their care and moving scientific gains quickly into practice across the U.S. The NCTSN is administered by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and coordinated by the UCLA-Duke University National Center for Child Traumatic Stress (NCCTS), which guides NCTSN collaborative efforts. The NCTSN has grown from 17 funded centers in 2001 to 82 currently funded centers and over 130 affiliate (formerly funded) centers and individuals, working in hospitals, universities, and community based programs in 45 states and the District of Columbia.

Register for the upcoming NCTSN event, “Jaime's Journey: Helping a Refugee Teen Cope with Guilt and Suicidal Ideation,” on Thursday, March 27, 2025 from 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM PT/1:30 to 3:00 PM ET. In this series, viewers experience how therapists handle critical turning points during dramatized therapy sessions and then watch multiple therapists review those sessions in case conferences. The topics covered in this series are layered and complex, with no “right answers.” They are a starting point to open up discussions on how to help children and families. In this session, you’ll see 15-year-old Jaime in a therapy session with Dr. Michael Gomez. Jaime has lived in the U.S. with his family for six years. His trauma history includes sexual abuse caused by a family friend, and recently, Jaime learned that this person also sexually abused his younger brother. Jaime struggles with guilt and shame for not speaking up earlier to protect his brother and help his parents. For children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), connections between symptoms and trauma are sometimes missed when the behaviors are attributed to a child’s IDD.
