On November 7, NC State SPIA’s Administrative Offices Management Program (AOMP) graduated its 100th session of public safety and law enforcement leaders. AOMP partners with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol and Wake County Sheriff's Office Sheriff’s Office to offer management courses on supervision, organizational behavior, police research and other topics. Since its inception in 1989, nearly 2,600 public safety personnel have completed the program, many becoming leaders in their fields – from police chiefs and directors to colonels and U.S. marshals. The program is directed by James Brunet, who emphasizes building a governmental workforce that is not only efficient and effective but also fair.

NC State SPIA students enjoyed participating in the state government’s second public policy and public administration networking event. Students learned much about the work of government, internship and career opportunities. It was also inspiring to connect with alumni now working with state agencies and great to meet our peers at neighboring universities. As Will Cowan (‘25) put it: “I really enjoyed this event. Actually getting to meet the people who are making a difference in government is infinitely more valuable than just reading a recruiting web page. It was great to make those connections, and to get to know our fellow students from different schools who will be working alongside us in the future" Thank you to the NC Office of State Human Resources and our colleagues at Duke, UNC and Meredith for organizing this event. We look forward to future collaborations and opportunities for NC State students to jump-start their careers in government.

NC State's Public Administration Alumni Society proudly celebrates?Claudia Odom Hager, who was recently promoted to Durham County Manager. At our October 18 annual alumni luncheon, Hager shared compelling advice in her talk, 'Leadership Lessons from the Public Sector Trenches,' offering insights into stakeholder communication and operational strategy. Recognized for her servant leadership, Hager was unanimously selected by Durham's Board of Commissioners to lead a budget of nearly $1 billion and manage 2,200 county employees.? #ncstatespia? #durhamcountygovernment?#ncstatepaalumni Correction: A previous version of this post identified Hager as the Deputy County Commissioner, a position she already held. This has now been edited to reflect her current position as Durham County Manager.

??????Wonderful exchange of ideas at NC State's School of Public and International Affairs yesterday! We hosted a?group of EU diplomats led by Sara Leming from the Bertelsmann Foundation for a dynamic conversation about NC voters' views on the upcoming US presidential election and Americans' perspectives on EU-US relations. Political Science Professors Steven Greene, Irwin Morris, and Andy Taylor answered questions and shared insights on American politics. Thanks to our European friends for their curiosity and engagement. These conversations strengthen our global understanding.

Recovery efforts related to the damage inflicted by Hurricane Helene have raised a host of questions about the role of local, state and federal governments in getting affected communities back on their feet. Who is responsible for doing what? And what lessons might policymakers take from this disaster? To learn more, Matt Shipman talked with Thomas Birkland, a professor of Public Administration in SPIA and expert on politics and policies related to disasters and crises. Read his thoughts! https://lnkd.in/egCK35ju

????? Exploring Careers in NC Government! Political science majors recently trekked to downtown Raleigh to explore public service careers. They connected with representatives from a variety of state agencies to learn about internships, job opportunities, and the incredible work taking place from Murphy to Manteo. The day concluded with a memorable reception at the North Carolina Executive Mansion (aka the People’s House). We thank all the agencies and officials who took the time to meet with our students and share their insights. These connections between academia and public service are crucial in shaping the future of public service and governance. We are also grateful for the support of SPIA alumni for making this trip possible. Our students are now one step closer to their future careers! Thank you SPIA alumni Isabel Chiseck and Brigid Lindley!
