After Hurricane Helene left parts of the High Country devastated, Alex sought shelter at Watauga Medical Center. While there, he overheard that the hospital cafeteria needed extra hands. A seasoned chef, he jumped in to help. That act of service turned into something bigger: a full-time role in the Watauga Medical Center kitchen. Now, Alex ensures that patients and their families receive nourishing meals during difficult times. “It takes a village,” he says, and he’s proud to be part of the one at Appalachian Regional Healthcare System . Students at Hillcrest Elementary in Alamance County now have access to health care without leaving their classrooms, thanks to a new telehealth partnership between ALAMANCE-BURLINGTON SCHOOL SYSTEM and Cone Health. This first-of-its-kind program in the district will connect students with medical professionals virtually, reducing absenteeism and ensuring timely care. “We are ensuring that students can receive timely medical attention without leaving school, helping them stay healthy and focused on learning," said Superintendent Aaron Fleming. Governor Josh Stein recognized Emily and Haylee Orellana during his State of the State Address for their dedication to healthcare and the success of Northern Regional Hospital's apprenticeship program. Emily, a soon-to-be registered nurse, and Haylee, a CNA-Apprentice, are part of Northern Regional’s “Grow Our Own” initiative, a partnership with Surry Community College and Surry-Yadkin Works that has eliminated the hospital’s reliance on traveling nurses by investing in local talent. “Thanks to this apprenticeship program, Northern Regional is training its next generation of healthcare workers, homegrown,” said Governor Stein.
