Our studio was entranced by Shirlette Ammons' powerful performance, fueled by emotion and social commentary. Her dynamic balance of hip-hop, spoken word and soul resonated deeply with us all. Stay tuned for this performance and more on Shaped by Sound, premiering in 2025, made possible through support from Come Hear North Carolina and the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.

Exciting news! The North Carolina Division of Parks and Recreation announced that it has awarded $6.6 million in grants for 17 land acquisition projects on state trails in nine counties. The funding comes from the Complete the Trails Program and will leverage more than $42.9 million in matching funds provided by local nonprofit state trail partners. Additionally, four projects were selected to receive a total of over $394,000 through the Connecting Communities to State Trails (CCST) grants, a subset of the Complete the Trails funding. These grants will leverage over $230,000 in matching funds and help communities with less than 25,000 residents develop trails and trail amenities that will connect to state trails. Last month, 30 teachers from Wake County Public Schools spent two immersive days in Historic Halifax exploring “Freedom for All: Quests for Liberation in Halifax.” Thanks to America 250 NC Fellow Matt Scialdone and a grant from America 250 NC, these dedicated teachers experienced an enriching learning excursion! From a tour of Halifax's Underground Railroad Trail to a Friendship Dance at Magazine Spring, the workshop theme of "Freedom for All" was present at each moment. Big thanks to Historic Halifax, Roanoke Canal Museum, members of the Haliwa-Saponi tribe, and many community members for providing tours, info sessions, performances, and immersive experiences. Thanks to their efforts, our VIP teacher-guests left with a deep appreciation of this hallowed ground! #AmericanEducationWeek #NCLearningHappensHere #LearningHappensHere
