The Impact of Mentorship on the Journey to Success By: Natasha Goodwin, NCBWDC Member As National Mentoring Month winds down, I'm compelled to reflect on the profound impact mentoring has had on my life. Growing up in Atlantic City, NJ, I was fortunate to have remarkable women enter my life, providing the inspiration and guidance I needed. Mentorship programs connected me with incredible women who had walked the path I aspired to tread, shaping the woman I am today and fueling my belief in paying it forward. In response to this call, I joined The National Coalition of 100 Black Women Inc., Metropolitan Washington, DC Chapter (NCBWDC), dedicated to impacting Black women and girls. NCBWDC's Exceptionally Me Mentor Program empowers high school girls with tailored support. Mentoring, especially for Black girls, is vital to debunk biased perceptions revealed by the Georgetown Law Center on Poverty and Inequality's study, "Girlhood Interrupted." Disturbing biases perceive Black girls as less innocent, needing less nurturing, protection, and support than white girls. NCBWDC's mentorship approach focuses on building confidence, supporting youth in navigating the complex path to college, guiding career paths, and helping mentees tap into resilience to overcome obstacles. In a society burdened by stereotypes, mentors play a transformative role by believing in their mentees' potential. Through group or one-on-one settings, mentors share personal stories, encourage vulnerability, offer affirmations, and introduce positive role models, illuminating limitless possibilities. Additionally, the Exceptionally Me program provides assistance in navigating the complex landscape of financial aid. The path to career readiness presents challenges, with limited access to role models and essential guidance for Black girls. NCBWDC, with its diverse membership, exposes mentees to various career paths with an emphasis on the STEAM field, and internship opportunities. Mental health and self-care are vital components of preparation, and NCBWDC mentors emphasize normalizing conversations about mental health, imparting stress management techniques, and promoting healthy habits to equip mentees for challenges they may face. As we conclude National Mentoring Month, it's crucial to renew our commitment to initiatives that empower Black girls. Organizations, educational institutions, and community leaders must collaborate for accessible and culturally sensitive mentorship programs. Black women in successful fields should step forward as mentors and role models, providing representation for Black girls. I challenge all of us to actively invest in mentoring. My mentors lit the path that led me to D.C, to attend and graduate from Howard University and embarking on a fulfilling career. It's time to pay it forward, ensuring that every Black girl has the opportunity to triumph over challenges through the transformative power of mentorship.
