??? Celebrating 50 Years of Innovation in Weather Science! ??? In 1974, a transformation in atmospheric research was born at NSF NCAR with the invention of the wind-finding Dropsonde. Since its first deployment during the GATE field campaign, this technology has transformed our understanding of severe weather systems. For five decades, Dropsondes have been pivotal in hurricane monitoring, tracking atmospheric rivers, and other vital meteorological research. ?? As highlighted by 9NEWS https://lnkd.in/ggUrb4Kh, Dropsondes continue to be an essential tool in atmospheric science, providing critical data for more accurate forecasting and climate research. This technology, which has contributed so much to weather safety and research, will be showcased at NSF NCAR’s Super Science Saturday https://lnkd.in/g39K7V_R. Join us to celebrate this legacy of innovation and explore how Dropsondes are advancing our understanding of our planet’s dynamic atmosphere. An NSF NCAR EOL end-to-end observational science enterprise.
关于我们
Formed in 2005, the NSF NCAR Earth Observing Laboratory (EOL) is one of the five laboratories of NCAR, the National Science Foundation’s Federally Funded Research and Development Center. As the successor of NCAR’s Atmospheric Technology Division (ATD), the mission of EOL is to provide leadership in observing facilities, field project support as well as research and data services needed to advance the scientific understanding of the Earth system. EOL manages the majority of NSF’s Lower Atmospheric Observing Facilities (LAOF) and deploys them in support of observational field campaigns, ranging from single investigator projects to large complex campaigns that involve multiple investigators, agencies, and platforms, nationally and internationally. EOL deploys its systems for research by scientists from universities, NCAR, and government agencies, as well as for education. An integral part of EOL’s mission is to develop the next generation of LAOF and to provide management and archiving of data from past supported campaigns.

The NSF NCAR Earth Observing Laboratory is actively testing components of the proposed Lower Troposphere Observing System (LOTOS) at NCAR’s Marshall Field site. LOTOS aims to integrate instruments like radars, lidars, wind profilers, ASSIST IR spectrometer, flux towers, and surface energy budget and trace gas sensors into a cohesive, deployable measurement platform for the scientific community. The Marshall tests are crucial for advancing sensor development and refining the algorithms needed to synchronize data from these diverse instruments. Upper photos show the ISFS and MPD lidar, lower photos show ISS requestable facilities. #NCAREOL? #NCAR_Science? #NSF #LOTOS

Cool off with this exciting update on results from SOS, the 2022-2023 field campaign studying the sublimation of snow: ?? Scientists found that most water loss to sublimation occurs after the release of April 1 runoff forecasts, critical for water management decisions. ?? Most of mid-winter’s sublimation occurs during blowing snow conditions, but much of it is redistributed and not lost to sublimation. ?? Based on the data, scientists were able to produce the most comprehensive examination to date on mountain snow sublimation, filling in longstanding gaps in knowledge.
