?? Build Your Own Remote ID Drone Monitoring System! ?? With Remote ID becoming a requirement for drones, we explored the options for building a DIY monitoring system. Inspired by solutions for ADS-B monitoring using a Raspberry Pi, Software Defined Radio (SDR), and software like dump1090, we discovered a fascinating open-source project outlined in a bachelor’s thesis from ZHAW Zurich University of Applied Sciences. Published by Sebastian Brunner and Fabia Müller in 2023 as part of their bachelor thesis project, this system uses just a Raspberry Pi and a Wi-Fi adapter to build a simple, low-cost Remote ID monitoring system! It captures Wi-Fi Beacon frames transmitted by drones with Remote ID, parses them, and displays drone activity on a map using a web interface. The backend system leverages Python and SQLite, making it affordable, portable, and open-source—providing an accessible alternative to DJI's AeroScope. While it may not be a complete solution, it’s an exciting DIY project for anyone interested in drone technology, remote ID tracking, or UAS security. The thesis highlights the benefits of lower costs, smaller size, and extensibility, though it notes some limitations like range and detection reliability. This project is ideal for hobbyists, developers, and drone enthusiasts eager to experiment with drone monitoring systems or learn more about drone tracking technology. We’re excited to announce that our partners at Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) have been granted a statewide Federal Aviation Administration Certificate of Authorization (COA) to operate their cutting-edge ALTI Reach drone! With support from AeroX, ECSU has reached a significant milestone that will unlock new opportunities for UAS training and research across North Carolina. This FAA approval is just the beginning. The next step? Securing a Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) COA, which will further expand ECSU's capabilities and impact in areas like: - Coastal monitoring - Conservation - Flood mapping - Search and rescue - Medical deliveries - And much more! With its 16.4 ft wingspan, 11 lbs payload capacity, and 10+ hours of flight endurance, the ALTI Reach drone, paired with North Carolina's only four-year UAS degree program, will give ECSU students and faculty the tools to lead innovation in UAS technology. ?? North Carolina's Drone Knowledge Test and Permit Repealed Today! ?? We are thrilled to announce that the North Carolina General Assembly has enacted House Bill 198, eliminating the state UAS operator knowledge test and permit! This significant legislative change marks a major victory for the drone community and underscores the incredible work of AeroX and our dedicated members. Since 2014, drone operators in North Carolina had to pass the NCDOT UAS Operator Knowledge Test and obtain a UAS permit. This law was initially introduced to address concerns about security and privacy. However, with the Federal Aviation Administration now fully regulating drone operations, this state-specific requirement has become redundant. Thanks to the relentless advocacy by AeroX, including hosting UAS Legislative Day and the UAS Caucus, lawmakers now understand the benefits of advanced drone operations. This new legislation, effective December 1, 2024, will streamline the process for commercial drone operators and further position North Carolina as a leader in drone innovation. We extend our deepest gratitude to all our members and supporters who have helped make this possible. Together, we are paving the way for a brighter future in advanced air mobility.
