Thanks to Gov. Josh Stein for showing the leadership that North Carolina (and our nation!) needs by recommitting to NC's membership in the US Climate Alliance. This bipartisan coalition is working to protect our environment and build our clean energy economy -- good news for all of us!

"When the next catastrophe that spews pollutants into the air or contaminants into our drinking water or food supply arrives, who will deal with the emergency and its aftermath?" From "Three Former E.P.A. Leaders: You’ll Miss It When It’s Gone," NYT, Feb. 27 https://lnkd.in/eAdR7khc

Overflowing toilets. Injured hikers stranded in the backcountry. Closed visitors’ centers. Those are just a few of the nightmare scenarios that are likely looming for the nation’s 433 national parks and sites as Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency slash the federal workforce ?? ?? The Chapter & our allies asked USFS - AGAIN - to amend its problematic Nantahala-Pisgah Forest Plan, this time in light of the tremendous damage Hurricane Helene did to these national forests. https://lnkd.in/eFufXJx9

We’re standing up for the Nolichucky River and the communities that depend on it. On behalf of American Rivers and American Whitewater, we're suing federal agencies to stop CSX Transportation from mining the Nolichucky’s riverbed. Instead of using upland quarries to supply the material needed to repair the rail line damaged by Hurricane Helene, CSX is extracting rock directly from the river, causing severe damage, risking local businesses, and increasing flood risks downstream. “We want CSX to be able to quickly rebuild its damaged rail lines, but it needs to do so in a responsible way that follows the law and protects our communities.” - Patrick Hunter, Managing Attorney of SELC’s Asheville office. The Nolichucky is a cherished river, drawing tourists and supporting local economies in East Tennessee and Western North Carolina. Let's keep it that way, learn more: https://lnkd.in/dAcBQ_3r

Want to help NC's new governor? Josh Stein is looking for energetic, innovative North Carolinians to help his administration. We're a little biased toward folks who want to make our environment a priority ... https://lnkd.in/esprWrbk

We're grateful to our summer fellows for their work to protect NC's wetlands!
"That's my name!"- my immediate words reading through the 2024 Natural and Working Lands Action Plan Progress Report, which I was able to contribute to this past summer working with NC Sierra Club and the strong team of fellows (s/o Isabela Delgado, Christopher Locklear, and Lucas Lynch)! In collaboration with the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, we crafted a section tracing the impacts of wetland policies on tribal communities across the state, including recommendations moving forward. Thanks to Erin Carey, Beth Roach, Bailey Recktenwald, and Emma Hughes for the opportunity to get involved and the guidance throughout. Hopefully, this is just the first of many future opportunities to advance environmental policies in my career. Check out the full report (our section begins on page 67): https://lnkd.in/em7rk7-T
