Product spotlight: Model 501 CTD ? The 501 is a package consisting of a rugged sensor body and miniaturised precision electronics. It was designed to be compact and simple to use. Without the need for interior dry volume, it is renowned for its simple installation and streamlined operations and maintenance. We are excited to have been able to support Acbotics Research, LLC, who recently installed the 501 to collect temperature and salinity data for acoustic modelling, for density calculations used in real-time buoyancy control, and to provide water column temperature and salinity as a part of the science dataset. Visionary engineer Neil Brown started the CTD development journey in the late 1950’s. He wanted to understand ocean salinity at depth in real-time. For that purpose he developed methods using measured seawater conductivity and temperature and pressure which resulted in the first modern conductivity-temperature-depth (CTD) sensor. Today even the smallest robotic platform can accurately measure fundamental ocean properties.
