Expand your Rhino.Inside skills with NBBJ Design and Robert McNeel and Associates (TLM, Inc) this November at the ACADIA “Designing Change” conference in Calgary, Alberta!?? ? Join NBBJ instructor Madeline Cotton and Japhy Walton and Scott Davidson from McNeel for this day-long workshop. Attendees will gain a strong theoretical understanding of Rhino.Inside and Revit data structures as well as several scripts which are applicable to common design challenges. The workshop will also explore how Rhino.Inside can act as a data conduit and conclude with a look inside the innovative workflows that Rhino.Inside enables, including parametric performance analysis directly from Revit and techniques to enable a straight-to-fab approach.? ? Curved shapes are often associated with comfort, safety and nature—in fact, they can reduce stress and promote relaxation by easing our brains’ threat response.?? ? So, for the Montage Health Ohana Center for Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health in Monterey, CA, our design team integrated a series of gently curved buildings into the campus’ sloped site to create an inclusive, healing environment for patients, their families and caregivers.?? ? The campus is composed of two long, waving volumes clad in a prefabricated, cross-laminated timber facade regularly punctuated with large windows. Informed by the latest neuroscience research, the campus design celebrates nature for wellness, with views to the surrounding landscape, gardens, and natural materials that contribute to patients’ sense of psychological safety.?? ? Orchids, dandelions, tulips—when it comes to the workplace, which flower are you? Though we all work in unique ways and require different surrounds to be productive, certain conditions—like spaces that allow us to focus and support executive functioning skills—enable us to perform our best.? ? That’s where the concept of “Orchids, Dandelions and Tulips” comes in. While the term was originally popularized by psychologists to explain different personality types, we worked with NBBJ Fellow Dr. John Medina to apply this concept to the workplace for the first time.?? ? Here, NBBJ's Ashlie Fuller, Matthew Somerton and Sarah Y. Steen explain how to design for orchids, who need quiet, personalized zones to focus; dandelions, who can work well anywhere; and tulips, who require a balance of open and private areas.?https://lnkd.in/gR3Pv_h5?

How delightful is your workplace? While cost per square foot remains a critical real estate metric, delight can also be measured to provide a more holistic look at the impact of your office. That’s why we created the Delight Factor, a quantitative analysis tool that scores a building on how it makes people feel. ? ? In CoreNet Global’s “The Source” newsletter, NBBJ’s Ryan Mullenix and andrea vanecko explain the four main contributors to the Delight Factor—nature, daylight, variety and socialization—and put them to the test on a tech client’s office that weaves together work, retail, and public spaces through an intentionally blurred interior-exterior environment.?https://lnkd.in/gTdg9EZW #interiordesign #workplace #publicspaces #design #nbbjdesign

Have you ever looked at the Amazon Spheres and thought, “How did they build that?” Well, here’s your chance to find out. Tune into the new season of “How Did They Build That” on Paramount+ and Smithsonian Channel to learn how ingenuity meets engineering in The Spheres.?? ?? The centerpiece of Amazon’s headquarters, The Spheres are a multi-story, glass-enclosed workplace containing tens of thousands of plants from around the world, designed to help Amazon employees work and feel their best. NBBJ architect John Savo explains how design computation helped generate The Spheres, each a pentagonal hexecontahedron (say that five times fast!) formed by tessellating a pentagon across its surface. Algorithms enable the team to quickly generate a steel-and-glass structure that could be constructed efficiently and cost-effectively, while prefabricating the primary structural steel components and assembling on-site helped maintain safety and quality control. While not everyone can build a workplace like The Spheres, we can all learn from the strategies behind their design.?? ??
