The 14-story inpatient addition tower continues to rise at the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) Hospital Expansion Project in Southwest Portland!? The 513,000-square-foot tower will house surgical oncology and cellular therapy services; the building will open with 128 beds with space for 64 more to accommodate future needs. The exterior will primarily feature glass vision panels and white spandrel glass, which reflects the surrounding landscape and ever-changing daylight conditions. “The outstretched forms of the patient floors serve as an iconic entry landmark, and afford patients and staff panoramic views of Mt. Hood,” said NBBJ partner Jose Sama. The project is expected to open in April 2026.? Artists are made, not born. This sentiment guides the design of Gage Academy of Art’s new location on the ground floor of Amazon’s HQ1 in downtown Seattle. While the partnership between the non-profit and tech leader may seem unusual, it’s mutually beneficial, bringing creativity to the neighborhood while providing a more accessible facility for the school.? ?? Inspired by the diverse backgrounds and processes of those attending the Academy, the design intends to offer new perspectives throughout a student’s daily experience. Unlike Gage’s previous layout in an aging building, the circulation of its new home encourages continuous exploration, with wide spaces for open critiques contrasted by secluded niches with views to the street below. Perimeter classrooms are positioned to maximize daylight exposure, while inner classrooms are more private.?? ?? A “vestibule gallery” prominently displays recent work and provides visitors a glimpse into an active classroom, reinforcing to passers-by Gage’s mission to educate through the arts. A vertical gallery marks a transition from the entry—designed as a public forum—to classrooms, artist’s café and ateliers above. Unique touches are interspersed throughout, such as patterned café walls that nod to the school’s previous location, and life-size sketches of faculty that adorn the staff offices.

Located within a thriving hub of 10 interconnected towers in Hong Kong's Quarry Bay, Swire's Two Taikoo Place commercial development enhances the well-being of tenants and the community through a mix of shared amenities and public spaces. The project also celebrated its grand opening earlier this month! The 32-story Keppel South Central mixed-use development marries distinct architecture with a focus on sustainability and energy efficiency, reimagining the office typology through restorative spaces and connection to nature, fresh air, and opportunities for social interaction. The building industry has come a long way when it comes to conversations about sustainability. But there's another often-overlooked culprit when it comes to generating waste—and we’re literally sitting on top of it. The desire for ever-changing offices means over 10 million tons of office furniture finds its way to landfills each year, and more than 600 million tons of construction and demolition waste is generated annually. And while this issue has an immense impact, it also presents an opportunity for designers to re-think how we approach tenant improvement, with an eye to creating spaces that are more flexible and timeless, and better suited to the hybrid work environments of today. It’s no secret that the world faces a housing crisis. An estimated 1.6 billion people lack access to adequate housing, and prices continue to rise due to the shortage.? But while government-subsidized affordable homes play a critical role, they alone cannot solve the problem. At their most basic level, courthouses provide space for judicial proceedings to take place. However, these buildings must also project an outward appearance that upholds the community’s faith in, and respect for, the justice system. The Tani Cantil-Sakauye Sacramento County Courthouse replaces an antiquated downtown courthouse with a state-of-the-art facility that brings renewed prosperity to the region while meeting the judicial needs of its growing community. Comprised of 17 floors and 53 courtrooms, the building covers an entire city block and houses the court’s criminal and civil operations, as well as a large jury assembly room, food services and civil settlement center. The facility, which is targeting LEED Gold specifications, will also consolidate three separate administrations under one roof. We look forward to the completion of this exciting project! Redevelopment and repositioning projects are some of our favorites at NBBJ. That's why we’re *extra* thrilled that our Icehouse Repositioning concept wins the Honor Award – Unbuilt in AIA Columbus’ annual Architecture Awards. Chosen by an esteemed jury, the awards celebrate the best designs from Columbus-based firms.? A marquee property in the developer’s Warehouse District portfolio, the Icehouse Building is set to be both the first redevelopment and a catalyst for the rest of the district. Yet as a former ice storage facility, its design needed to be rethought to compete with new, Class-A offices. By leveraging the building’s thermal mass (masonry), replacing its deteriorating exteriors and adding a 15-foot slot atrium to inject daylight into the deep floor plate, the team was able to adapt the building’s challenging aspects, amplifying its historic features and breathing new life into the old structure. The result is a re-envisioned office, food and beverage destination that the jury calls, “A bold approach to warehouse reuse by improving the building through subtraction and addition rather than a straight renovation.”?https://lnkd.in/gJYgmMqx??

Scientists face elevated rates of anxiety and depression due in part to the profession’s competitive nature and demanding hours. However, the physical environment also plays an important role in improving wellbeing.? In our survey of 1,059 scientists in collaboration with The New York Academy of Sciences Academy of Scientists, 60% of respondents said their buildings can do more to support their mental and physical health. Life scientists tended to rate their buildings lower than other disciplines did. These findings present exciting new opportunities to design research buildings. We believe part of the answer lies in neuroscience and are currently working with NBBJ Fellow and developmental molecular biologist Dr. John J. Medina, Ph.D. to explore building design strategies that support personal agency, encourage movement, and provide access to nature to improve mental and physical health.?
