It’s inspiring to see our mission for cleaner, more accessible energy take flight across continents. The awareness about the potential of airborne wind is increasing - in the US and worldwide. Roger Bergua has presented at NAWEA the results of a joint National Renewable Energy Laboratory - Sener project, showing how the optimization of floating wind substructures requires solvers capable of capturing member-level loads. In this work, this functionality of #OpenFAST has been applied to the #HiveWind platform, demonstrating how a well-tuned fast model can obtain similar results to a FEM, allowing full load analysis to be carried out with reasonable means. Atlantic Marine Energy Center researchers from Lehigh University Mechanical Engineering attended the NAWEA, North American Wind Energy Academy 2024 Wind Tech Conference. Mohd Hanzla presented his work on Spectral response of Tidal Turbines subjected to free stream turbulence. @Kevin Wyckoff presented his work on Influence of OWT modeling on Optimal Power Flow of Grids (collaboration with Faegheh 'Farrah' Moazeni and Javad (Pouya) Khazaei). Three of our PhD researchers just presented their work at NAWEA, North American Wind Energy Academy! Jakob Gebel presented his results on fatigue loading in wind turbines, comparing bottom fixed and floating structures. Rebeca Nunes Marini focused on analyzing the environmental factors impacting turbine design at existing wind farm sites, in order to compare with the design requirements. Diederik van Binsbergen investigated wake steering strategies and how uncertainty in environmental conditions impact their performance. It's exciting to see this particular group of researchers presenting together, as their combined work capture data-driven models of environmental, wake, and loading conditions; the necessary blocks for a farm-calibrated digital twin. Can't wait to see what the future will bring regarding this collaboration!

We're attending the NAWEA Wind Technical Conference in New Jersey this week, organized by NAWEA, North American Wind Energy Academy, and Rutger University. Our colleague David Ponsà is on-site, presenting a poster on our methodology for calibrating Vortex TIMES, our high-resolution ten-minute time series, with measurements, which allows for the extrapolation of turbulence over the long term.
