关于我们
For more than 200 years, the U.S. Navy has served as the shield of the republic. Our nation’s freedom has depended in large part on the freedom of the seas, which comprise 71 percent of the Earth’s surface. Keeping the seas open for trade has been a pillar of the Navy’s mission since its founding. Today, with 80 percent of America’s goods imported by ship, that mission is more important than ever. To better share this legacy, the Naval History and Heritage Command has embarked on an exciting journey to create a new national flagship Navy museum in the heart of our nation’s capital. The Navy will be the only military service with a national museum in Washington, D.C. The new National Museum of the United States Navy presents an unparalleled opportunity to tell the Navy’s story and inspire the next generation of sailors, citizens, and leaders that our country needs. The museum will energize public awareness of the Navy’s integral role in defending freedom around the world and preserving America’s economic prosperity. As part of an extended Navy campus, it will provide a home for naval ceremonies and functions to celebrate historic anniversaries and individual achievements. As a center for inspired storytelling, it will become an internationally recognized forum for innovative thought leadership, education, and training. The Navy Museum Development Foundation has been selected and endorsed by the U.S. Navy to achieve one mission—and only one mission: to secure the funding required to build a state-of-the- art national Navy museum.

USS Wyoming (BB-32) Ship's Bell has been moved! Little by little, the team at the Naval History and Heritage Command, along with Museum of the U.S. Navy, have been working hard to move artifacts in preparation of the new National Museum! From the Naval History and Heritage Command: "Commissioned in September 1912, USS Wyoming (BB-32) participated in World War I in the North Sea as part of Battleship Division Nine, serving with the British Grand Fleet. The battleship became a training ship in the 1930s and trained gunners throughout World War II. Decommissioned in 1947, Wyoming was then scrapped. The bell was transferred to the Naval Historical Center (now Naval History and Heritage Command). Removed in November 2022, Wyoming's bell was transferred to the Naval History and Heritage Command’s Curator Branch, Collection Management Facility, at Richmond, Virginia." Helm wheel from the USS Albany (1899) has been moved as it waits for its new home at the new National Museum of the Navy. From the Naval History and Heritage Command: "Etched Helm Wheel from the protected cruiser Albany reads, 'USS Albany / 1899'. A helm wheel is also known as the steering wheel of a ship. The protected cruiser was launched in February 1899. Serving in both the Pacific and Caribbean, she became the flagship for Squadron 6, Patrol Force, Atlantic Fleet during World War I. Following assistance in the Russian Civil War in 1919, she returned to duty with the Asiatic Fleet. Reclassified as a light-cruiser in 1921 - (CL-23), Albany was decommissioned in October 1922, then scrapped in 1930. The wheel was removed from display in the Spanish-American War section in December 2022 and transferred to the Naval History and Heritage Command’s Curator Branch, Collection Management Facility in Richmond, Virginia." Navy Day, observed on October 27 was established in 1922 by the Navy League of the United States to honor the valor and dedication of the U.S. Navy. This date was chosen to coincide with the birthday of Theodore Roosevelt, a strong supporter of the U.S. Navy, who served as Assistant Secretary of the Navy. Furthermore, it marks the anniversary of a pivotal 1775 report by the Continental Congress, advocating for a strong naval force built upon merchant ships. On this Navy Day, we salute the brave men and women who have dedicated their lives to protecting our maritime freedom and securing our national interests. Today, we stand united in gratitude as we honor the brave men and women who have been deployed in service of our country. Their sacrifices ensure our safety and freedom, and for that, we owe them our deepest respect and appreciation. We also recognize the immense sacrifices made by our troops and the families who support them tirelessly from home. Throughout the week, at NMDF we highlight the work done by U.S. Navy Sailors throughout time during their deployments in an effort to showcase the commitment of our Naval service members who have inspired younger generations. To all of you, job well done! #DayoftheDeployed #NationalDayoftheDeployed #Deployment #MilitaryFamily

Meet "Fat Man", also known as the Mark III, which was part of the first generation of nuclear weapons. As we prepare for the construction of the new National Museum of the Navy, many artifacts are being moved as well. From the Naval History and Heritage Command: "Nicknamed “Fat Man,” the Mark III was the United States’ first generation nuclear weapon. Developed in the 1940s, this type of bomb was used on the Japanese city of Nagasaki in 1945 and for both tests at Bikini Atoll in 1946. Each bomb produced the equivalent explosive power of 20,000 to 23,000 tons of TNT. In comparison, modern nuclear weapons produce an explosive force equivalent to 475,000 tons of TNT."
