Leaders aspire to achieve high performance, cultivate strong cultures, create a positive impact, and engage in meaningful work. Beyond the Sea promotes and teaches Leading with Love, drawing from diverse experiences and offering practical tools for leaders to transform themselves, overcome challenges, build meaningful relationships, and elevate organizational performance. The three core ideas from Leading with Love include: Leading with Love: Adopting a leadership approach that prioritizes empathy, understanding, and compassion not only fosters well-being but also creates a positive work environment. Measurable Impact: Using the research-based Leader Member Exchange assessment, you can see firsthand how Leading with Love significantly boosts positive cultures and outcomes. This method is backed by over 50 years of real-world evidence, showing improvements in job turnover, burnout, and productivity. Realize True Success: Embracing Leading with Love transcends the pursuit of material gains or power. It's about achieving a fulfilling life through serving and assisting others, ultimately embodying what it truly means to lead a 'good life.'

What drives you as a leader in healthcare? How do you inspire those around you to uphold the highest standards of safety, reliability, and care? In "High Reliability Healthcare", Dr. Jeffrey Kuhlman and I explore the power of establishing a creed to guide every professional’s actions and decision-making. Drawing from father of the nuclear US Navy Admiral Hyman G. Rickover’s watchstanding principles, a healthcare creed could unify teams and create a shared commitment to excellence. Imagine if every professional in healthcare lived by something like this: I work in healthcare because I want to bring healing, hope, and strength to my patients. I work to gain a higher level of understanding. I insist on having personal integrity. I work in a group that has organizational integrity. I follow formal communication and procedures. I have a questioning attitude. I accept backup, and I will forcefully back up my teammates. I live by this creed, not by clinging to a dogma or canon. I believe that I can have a huge impact for good in my chosen profession. As leaders, it’s on us to set the tone and create a culture where values like these are not just words but a way of life. Let’s ensure healthcare professionals at every level are empowered to embrace a shared vision that prioritizes safety, integrity, and collaboration. What would your creed look like? Share your thoughts in the comments! #Healthcare #Leadership #BookLaunch #PatientSafety

Chief Quality & Safety Officer | Vice President | AdventHealth | White House Physician 2000-2013 | Transformative Healthcare & High Reliability Healthcare Author, Speaker, Podcaster

Did you know that according to the World Health Organization, adverse events from unsafe care rank among the 10 leading causes of death and disability globally? Every year, millions of patients are harmed by avoidable errors in healthcare settings. Common adverse events include: ? Medication errors ? Unsafe surgical procedures ? Healthcare-associated infections ? Diagnostic errors ? Patient falls ? Pressure ulcers ? Patient misidentification ? Unsafe blood transfusions ? Venous thromboembolism These preventable harms aren’t just statistics—they represent lives forever changed. As leaders in healthcare, we must take a proactive approach to improving safety and reliability within our systems. Borrowing from the principles of high reliability—like those perfected in the U.S. Nuclear Navy—we can implement processes that prioritize precision, accountability, and continuous improvement. The goal? Transforming healthcare into a field where adverse events are the exception, not the norm. The time for change is now. Together, we can make healthcare safer for everyone.

Tonight, I had the privilege of attending "Leading Through Innovation," where I had the honor of meeting three trailblazing leaders. Each speaker reminded us that true innovation begins with leadership rooted in empathy, purpose, and love. Glenn Llopis, leadership strategist and author, shared how embracing individuality and personalization can transform organizations. His vision of shredding the limitations of standardization encourages us to lead boldly in today’s rapidly changing world. He is the founder of the Leadership in the Age of Personalization movement. As the Naval Aide to President George W. Bush, Dr. Robert Roncska (a/k/a "Navy Bob") ensured the safety of the Office of the President and carried the “Nuclear Football,” a role that demanded trust, integrity, and precision. Today, he applies those same leadership principles to his work as Senior VP of the Florida Chamber Health Council, where he’s leading efforts to make Florida the healthiest state in America. Khali Sweeney, Founder and CEO of Detroit’s Downtown Boxing Gym, shared how mentorship, determination, and the belief that every child deserves to be heard can change lives and uplift entire communities. This event showcased the incredible power of leading with compassion, innovation, and action and I can't wait to read their books! Thank you, Christin Collins, for moderating such an inspiring conversation! #LeadershipWithPurpose #Innovation #MentalHealthAdvocacy #EmpowermentThroughMentorship

Yes, I'm breaking the posting rules with this being a long post. Yet, all points are relevant. It’s truly a small world! I had the pleasure of collaborating with author (see link below) and Floridian Christin Collins during her impactful consulting work in Jackson, Miss., last year. Her expertise in data collection and analysis is remarkable, and she excels at devising strategic plans to tackle significant initiatives. Now that I’m in Florida, I reconnected with Christin and had the distinct privilege of attending a thought-provoking meeting she helped organize, titled "Love and Leadership: Inspiring Change and Healing." At first glance, the inclusion of the word "love" in a business context may seem unconventional. However, hearing the insights shared by the panelists illuminated its profound relevance to effective leadership. In a world filled with unprecedented challenges, we were reminded that leading with empathy and compassion is not just essential—it’s transformative. Here are a few key points that resonated with me, and I hope they encourage you to reflect as well. Sometimes, we become so task-oriented that we need to ask ourselves, “What am I doing?”: * Lead with Humility: As leaders, we often become task-focused, driven by what needs to be accomplished. However, it's crucial to listen to our teams and recognize that they are on this journey with us. * The Power of Compassionate Leadership: This approach doesn’t just drive organizational success; it fosters personal fulfillment and community healing. By putting love at the forefront of our leadership style, we create a beacon of hope and resilience. * Prioritize Self-Care: To lead effectively, we must also take time for ourselves. Only by nurturing our own well-being can we be fully present for our teams. During the event, I was fortunate to meet incredible leaders such as Navy Bob and Dr. Jeffrey Kuhlman, our AdventHealth Chief Quality & Safety Officer. Dr. Kuhlman's experience serving as a physician to three U.S. Presidents is a testament to the power of dedicated leadership. It was also great to reconnect with my former CEO, Scott Kashman, MHA, FACHE. Also, I would like to thank Samantha Kearns-O'Lenick and Workscapes, Inc.. for hosting the event. It was truly first-class. Let’s continue to inspire change and foster healing in our communities. Together, we can build a brighter, more resilient future where empathy and leadership go hand in hand. https://lnkd.in/gPrzFekt

During my time in the US Navy, I learned one critical truth: when lives are on the line, reliability is everything. It’s time to bring that same standard to our healthcare system—making care safer and more reliable for everyone. How? Dr. Jeffrey Kuhlman and I outline the path in our latest book out December 3rd, "High Reliability Healthcare", available for pre-order now!

Trust isn’t just a ‘soft skill’—it’s a fundamental leadership asset and a cornerstone of high-performance cultures. True leadership begins each day with a commitment to build, earn, and sustain trust across every interaction and decision. In my experience, I’ve seen how leaders skilled in cultivating trust can create environments where teams thrive, innovation flourishes, and collaboration reaches new heights. Trust isn’t easy. It takes consistency, transparency, and accountability. But for leaders, the rewards are well worth the effort—it’s the foundation for loyalty, engagement, and long-term success. How do you integrate trust-building into your leadership approach to inspire your team and foster growth?
