Heather’s session, 'Estate Planning and Survivor Benefits Entitlements—No, They’re Not What You Think!', will tackle the maze of misinformation surrounding benefits for veterans’ survivors. She’ll break down eligibility for DoD and VA benefits, clarify how they differ based on active duty or post-service death, and highlight why many survivors miss out—either from assumptions or not applying. Plus, she’ll uncover hidden gems in SGLI and VGLI policies. Heather Walrath AFC?, MQFP?, Navy Mutual Aid Association’s Financial Educator and Military Benefits Liaison, is an accredited financial educator who has enjoyed working with military members and families for the last 16 years while empowering them with financial education. She is a 2009 FINRA Military Spouse Fellow and holds a certificate for the Accredited Financial Counselor designation from the Association of Financial Counseling Planning and Education and also the Military Qualified Financial Planner designation. She is also an accredited Veterans Representative. She has worked as a Personal Financial Counselor (PFC) with all branches of the military, including the Guard and Reserve components, as part of both the non-profit education sector and the Department of Defense PFC network. She is a subject matter expert on military survivor benefits and has been a featured contributor to magazines such as Military Spouse, Military Family, Guard and Reserve Magazine, and a featured speaker with MOAA, Blue Star Families, MilMoneyCon, the Arc of Northern Virginia, AFCPE, and Student Veterans of America. She has supported many Yellow Ribbon events, provided one-on-one counseling, and educational programs to our military and veteran communities. Heather also served our military community for over 25 years as a military spouse with involvement and leadership in many base and community military events and organizations. Her passion is providing members with correct, unbiased information about the DoD Survivor Benefit Program and other survivor entitlement programs. She facilitates financial education and SBP presentations at military installations throughout the country to help members and their spouses make informed decisions. She also assists with VA disability claims and VA benefit eligibility. Heather uniquely understands the challenges and opportunities of military life and is thankful that her family finally settled in northern Virginia with her husband’s retirement from the Air Force in 2023.
