How do we create an equitable platform for students to explore careers? This is a question that the founders of NaviGuide are constantly thinking about as we build our platform. In fact, students born in low-income communities are less likely to earn a post-secondary degree. There are many factors contributing to this, which include economic barriers, lack of resources, lack of exposure to potential career aspirations, and so much more. How can we improve opportunity and access? All students are inherently ambitious. However, when faced with socio-economic inequity, students are left thinking some career aspirations are too difficult to pursue leading to feeling limited in their options. College and CTE programs are promoted, but it's no secret that the cost to attend are undeniably high. While it may seem obvious to some individuals that grants and scholarships exist to help ease the costs, studies show that 22% of students didn't know FAFSA was an option and roughly 35% of students didn't know how to complete the FAFSA form. While the narrative to complete college or a CTE program is pushed, we must think about the insurmountable barriers students, especially from low-income communities, face in order to understand what an equitable careers pathway platform looks like. Though a degree is essential to achieving economic mobility, we need to peel the layers back to truly understand how we can increase admittance and completion of post-secondary programs. We must reduce the barriers to access and opportunity that students are faced with as they pursue their goals. There is A LOT more to discuss; we are just barely scratching the surface.
