On August 3, 1990, President George H. W. Bush declared November as Native American Heritage Month, providing us an opportunity to pay tribute to the rich ancestry and heritage of Native Americans and Alaskan Natives and recognize their immeasurable contributions to our great Nation.?This month serves as a reminder of the resilience and strength of Indigenous peoples throughout our history. ? Let us also pay tribute to the many Native Americans who have proudly served in the U.S. Navy, exemplifying courage and commitment to our country. Notable figures include: ? - Woody S. Johnson: A member of the Cherokee Nation, Johnson served with distinction in the Navy and later became an advocate for Native American rights, inspiring future generations of Indigenous service members. - Ada Deer: A member of the Menominee Tribe, Deer served as a role model for Native women in the military, breaking barriers and paving the way for future leaders in the Navy and beyond. ? As we reflect on these contributions, I encourage everyone to take time this month to learn more about Native American history and culture. ? On 19 November at 1130, please join us in the Link where we will host a special event featuring OSD Senior Tribal Advisor and Liaison, Alicia Sylvester, and DON Director of Tribal and Indigenous Affairs, Lisa Morales. There will also be a performance by the Jemez Pueblo Youth Dance Group. ? VR/ Dean ?

The two-hour tour provided NSAM staff with an overview of Monterey County’s present-day water supply portfolio, and showcased how the military is meeting its obligation to the Monterey Peninsula. The tour also allowed staff to understand why water quality and continuous water testing is vital to ensuring the health of all personnel on the NSAM campus.
