N&W Supports Pennsylvania Archaeology Council Volunteer Day On Saturday, October 26th, N&W volunteered with Pennsylvania Archaeological Council (PAC) at Lebanon Cemetery in York County, PA, located at 1412 North George Street, York, PA.?The day was organized to assist Friends of Lebanon Cemetery (FoLC), a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation, restoration, and commemoration of historic African-American cemeteries throughout York County, PA.?PAC assisted FoLC with a pedestrian survey, GPS mapping, and photographing of the Lebanon Cemetery.?Lebanon Cemetery is the largest, and one of the oldest, African-American cemeteries in York County, PA. On the day of the event, Tim Carn, M.A., RPA, from N&W’s Cultural Resources team, and Board member of PAC, volunteered his time and N&W provided 2 professional-grade GPS units for use.?Mr. Carn instructed volunteers on the use of the GPS units and software.?He also took part in collecting data in a team that included community members, IUP graduate students and York College undergraduates.?Over the course of the day, more than 700 previously unmapped gravesites were recorded.?Tim said, “PAC and I found the opportunity to help these groups was a rewarding experience, and I look forward to similar projects in the future.
