On Wednesday, February 19th, Luke Turko, P.E., our Director of Geotechnical Engineering, participated in the ASHE Mid-Allegheny & Altoona Sections Joint Meeting Professional Panel Discussion.?Luke served as a panelist on a transportation industry panel to allow University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown students to ask questions and learn about the unique job functions required of both the state and consultant level within the transportation industry.?#ashe #transportation #geotechnical #civilengineering #teamwork

It invites us to dream boldly, innovate relentlessly, and create a future shaped by our collective ingenuity. Engineers Week 2025 is focused on highlighting the remarkable contributions of engineers in shaping tomorrow’s world. How N&W participate in “Design Your Future” -? **Promote Innovations - The engineering community should share groundbreaking projects on social media, newsletters, or at events to inspire pride in the engineering community. N&W has recently had the opportunity to collaborate on teams for exciting projects, including: *City of Philadelphia Department of Aviation – On-call design services with various work orders to support the City of Philadelphia Department of Aviation, Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) and Philadelphia Northeast Airport (PNE).?N&W provided various surveying services. *Ryerson Station State Park and Stream Restoration Improvements – Greene County, PA – N&W provided civil and geotechnical engineering services, along with survey services and AASHTO-accredited laboratory soil and rock testing, in support of proposed improvements, including stream restoration of the North Fork of Dunkard Fork, a new access road and single-span bridge over Dunkard Fork, nature trails, a retaining wall supported nature walkway, a recreational pond, picnic pavilions and stormwater management improvements for the 1164-acre Ryerson Station State Park. *Bridge Design, Analysis, and Inspection, Ref. No. FDC-500-813 - State Parks and State Forest Land within PA – N&W provided environmental, cultural resources, and geotechnical engineering support on this work-order based, open-end contract, for up to 5-years.?Support has been provided for work orders involving the replacement of structures and trails, and cultural resources for historic structures. **Support Career Growth:?N&W provides mentorship and skill-building internships for college students, along with providing resources for tuition, professional development, professional organization memberships, and encouraging our early-career engineers to pursue their professional licensures. **Reflect and Inspire:?N&W encourage professionals to set personal goals.?We hope they will utilize the resources available to them to help envision how they can meet those goals and drive future advancements. #eweek2025 #designyourfuture #engineeringweek2025 #teamwork #civilengineering

February 11th is International Day of Women and Girls in Science! The International Day of Women and Girls in Science (IDWGS) marks the milestone 10-year anniversary in 2025.?IDWGS is a global effort to promote gender equality in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) industries and careers.?Closing the gender gap in science requires breaking stereotypes, supporting women’s advancement, fostering inclusive environments, and promoting role models to inspire girls. Shockingly though, during a survey with The Institution of Engineering and Technology, when asked to name a woman – past or present – in STEM, only 8% of people could name any women who have made significant contributions to STEM fields! Computer and engineering occupations made up the largest portion of the STEM workforce at 80%.?Women represented 15% of those in engineering occupations, up from 3% in 1970. Have you heard of Elsie Eaves, the first female engineer and associate member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE)??Or Emily Warren Roebling, an engineer that contributed more than 10 years to the completion of the Brooklyn Bridge? Or Nora Stanton Barney, a civil engineer and was among the first women to graduate with an engineering degree in the United States? Of Mary Elizabeth Anderson, the inventor of the windshield wiper? The influence of women in STEM goes back generations, however they are rarely remembered by everyday people today. How many women with significant contributions to STEM fields can you name?
