On behalf of Chairman Dan Holland, the Naval War College Foundation (NWCF) Board of Trustees, and our dedicated team, we proudly congratulate Admiral James Stavridis, USN (Ret.), 16th Supreme Allied Commander of NATO, our 2024 Sentinel of the Sea Award recipient! Admiral Stavridis was honored on November 8 during an unforgettable evening at the New York Yacht Club in New York City. The Sentinel of the Sea Award is the highest distinction granted by the NWCF, recognizing individuals who embody the principles and legacy of the U.S. Naval War College (USNWC). The evening was filled with meaningful and memorable moments, beginning with opening remarks from our Master of Ceremonies, Lawrence Di Rita, who added a personal touch by reflecting on his close connections with Admiral Stavridis and David Rubenstein. CAPT George Lang, USN (Ret.), NWCF President and CEO, RADM Darryl Walker, USN, 59th President of the USNWC, and Chairman Holland shared their reflections on Admiral Stavridis’ distinguished service and the vital role of the USNWC, highlighting the importance of the NWCF’s support for its mission. For the first time, this year’s gala featured a captivating fireside chat with David Rubenstein and Admiral Stavridis, providing unique insights into the Admiral’s perspectives on leadership, national security, and the importance of the education provided by the USNWC. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all our sponsors who helped make this event a tremendous success. Today, the U.S. Naval War College (USNWC) proudly recognized 39 military service men and women who graduated in the 2024 November class. The graduates chose Dr. John H. Maurer, Alfred Thayer Mahan Professor of Sea Power and Grand Strategy, to deliver the commencement address. His thoughtful and moving speech resonated deeply with all in attendance, leaving a lasting impression on the graduates and their families. Special recognition was given to the class's honor graduates: CDR Ronald Herrera, USN (College of Naval Warfare), and MAJ Sam Balch, USA (College of Naval Command and Staff). Both honor graduates delivered remarks, reflecting on their time at the USNWC, the lessons they learned, and the experiences that will guide them in their future careers. In recognition of their exceptional academic, leadership, and service achievements, CAPT George Lang, USN (Ret.), President and CEO of the Naval War College Foundation (NWCF), presented each honor graduate with an engraved Weems & Plath compass. Congratulations to all of today’s graduates! The NWCF wishes you continued success as you take the next step in your remarkable careers. The Naval War College Foundation team was glad to attend last night’s Dinner with Drones, hosted by the U.S. Naval War College’s E. A. Sperry Chair of Unmanned & Robotic Systems and the Unmanned Systems and Conflict in the 21st Century course moderators. The evening’s speaker was Ian Estaphan Owen, CEO and Co-Founder of Jaia Robotics, on “Innovation in the Small UUV Field: Fast, Cheap, & Many.” The evening was an opportunity for current students to hear about real-world applications and interact with experts in the industry. #NavalWarCollegeFoundation #NWCF #USNavalWarCollege #USNWC #JaiaRobotics #UnmannedSystems
